Re: Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp (New Questions)

How far should the pull start rope come out before it catches? Mine seems to pull out about 12-18 inches ( not always) before it locks to the flywheel. Is this normal, or do I need to take the recoil apart?

Should I break it down anyway and replace the 32 y/o rope for good measure? It looks to be in good condition, but I don't know if they're prone to deterioration with age.

replace the rope. It's cheap insurance especially if its that old. I sell shoes and I have customers who call me all the time about shoes they have had for a couple of years, but don't wear very often. They are wondering why the stitching is coming apart. DRY ROT same as a rope. They need to come out about that much so the bendix engages with the flywheel.

Get some good quality rope to replace it. Go to a place that sells line for sailboat.

Sounds to me like the grease in that pull starter mechanism has turned to glue - it should only come out about 4" or so max before engaging. Time to pull it apart & clean it out. Do you have the instructions & rope specifications?

The manual gives the length for the rope, but not any other info other than "starter rope". I'll be ok there.

It does call for the use of a "spring winder special tool # 383966" so I guess I'll have to improvise something for that.

Oh yeah, you won't need that. You can just set the spring into the "cup" on the starter's top housing, catch the end of it with the pin in the starter pulley, then attach the pulley and wind it up. Frankly, the factory tool looks harder to use.
Once it's wound up, there's a hole through the pulley that indexes with a hole in the housing. Drop a nail or whatever through there to lock it. Makes attaching the rope a whole lot easier.
Getting the rope through the rubber part of the handle is the hard part. Stiff wire (pref steel) used as a feed wrapped around the very end of the rope and then run through the middle seems to work well enough for me. A little lube (pref silicone) helps.
Rope should be 7/32" dia according to the specs. But I can never find this. 1/4" works fine though I suspect the slightly thinner stuff is easier to feed. Use a figure 8 knot for the stopper.

There's a service bulletin about removing a bit off the pulley's hub to tighten up the pulley. If it's really worn and you have the inclination, fire me an email at paul.moir@gmail.com and I'll send you a copy.

Paul,
I removed the recoil assy this morning. The grease is gummy like you suspected. I also found that the gear on the flywheel that the recoil catches on was missing one of the three bolts, thus throwing it off-center. None of the parts show any wear at all so that's good. Other than a little dirt, the rope actually looks good.

I'm going to pull the flywheel this weekend and inspect the magneto, but I have to get my OB tools from my other boat first.

I just found that the ear on one of the starter pawls is gone. I'll have to find a new one someplace before I can re install the rewind starter now.

The manual from 1972 calls for type c gearcase oil. I know that is what you need for elec shift, but is it still considered the best type today for this manual gearcase?

No. Use BRP HiVis or equivalent 90 weight outboard gearcase lube. Actually, I would use UltraHPF given the choice between it and HiVis.

Any luck with the starter pawl?

.....and what color were the original coils? I have spark now, but maybe I should change them anyway. Mine are brown and look in good shape externally.

Sure sounds like them. Tap them with a screwdriver and see if they crack.

The aftermarket 18-5181 coils are very good. The OEM ones aren't bad either. It's a good idea to replace them now as they will fail for sure. The aftermarket one is <$20 each so it's not much money to do.

Re: Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp (some new good news)

Still waiting for the tiller arm, iboats carb kit and kill switch to arrive. I did recieve some other things including the new starter pawls. After getting the recoil starter back on I was finally able to do a compression and spark test.

#1 107 and strong spark jumping 1/4" gap

#2 110 spark same

I have good #'s so far and looking forward to getting carb back together. I soaked in berrymans overnight and blew out passages. Only questionable part at this point is the low speed needle. It has a slight amount of wear on one side at the tip.

Don't worry about that. The damage has to be real severe before it'll make the least difference.
