Hello

I was just wondering if the starter solenoid on my 1984 115 HP I6 Merc is repairable. It clicks when I turn the key, but the wire to the starter reads 0V. So there is obviously something wrong with the solenoid. How easy is it to dismantle the thing and check whats wrong?

I did repair one once out of desperation. You can drill out the 4 rivets that hold it together. Clean all the contacts inside and put it back together with small bolts and nuts. Then seal it with liquid tape. It lasted until I could get a new one.

This is not a high dollar item. The last one lasted 22 years why try and fix something that would likely fail quickly again -- probably when you are at the farthest point from the dock.

I fix them all the time on old tractors.....but I don't clean up the contacts, I turn them over; good as new. Never had to fix one on a marine engine.
