Engine dies under load

Recently, I purchased a 16' bowrider with a 60hp rude. My first trip to the lake, the engine kept cutting out on me. I brought it back out and changed to new fuel, drain all the fuel from the engine, and adding a water seperator to the line. I ran it with muff and it ran fine on land. My second trip to the lake, the same problem rises.

I been searching the forums and found people with similar problems. However, I did not find a definite answer to my question. I notice on my second trip that the prime bulb did become completely flat. The gas tank is a regular 6 gal tank and is not inside the boat. The tank did not have any release vent valve or anything like that.

If i simply undo the cap a little bit to let air in, do you think that this would solve my problem?

Thanks for any help

If there is a connector at the tank be sure it is on the right way around and on all the way.The vent may be in the connector assembly at the tank. if not on correctly the vent won't open.

try leaving the cap loose to get air. Some of the old caps had pretty small holes in them. You might see if they are clogged. Usually a little carb cleaner with the tube attached will clean them out.

I checked the arrow on the bulb. It is pointing towards the engine. I also looked on the gas can again. There is a little vent screw on the cap that i didn't notice. It was only opened a little bit. Hopefully, when i test the boat tomorrow, with the valve screw all the way open, it'll solve the problem.

While i'm testing the boat at the lake, do you guys have any other suggestions on what to look at?

Thanks

Before I run it at the lake, I would recommend changing the lower unit gear oil. Since the motor is new to you, you cannot trust that maintenance has been recently done. Use new washers on the drain/fill screws. Also, check the condition of lower end gear lube. If it's creamy/milky looking do not run motor...water has entered the lower unit. Also, rub some of the first oil that comes out between your fingers to check for metal.
Best to be safe than sorry.

Just finish draining this out yesterday. Oil was pretty much pitch black. Pump some fresh oil in there. Will take her out to the lauch tomorrow for a test. Hopefully, things will go smoothly.

Re: Engine dies under load

Well, took her to the lake today. Still having same problems but even worse now. I put the motor into reverse to get out of the dock, and she dies. Before I went to lauch her, I was at my house using muffs to warm her up. Everything was fine until i was at the dock. Took about 20 minutes to start her up. I'm getting fuel and spark in all cylinder. I don't think it's the compression but will test it later on this week. Any suggestions before I take her to the mechanic?

Thanks

I had the same problem with an evinrude I had. It was in the carb adjustments. On the muffs there is not back pressure on the exhaust and it will run. With back pressure it will need to be adjusted to run in the water.

Do you adjust it with the idle screws? if not, more detail on how to do this?

I just did a compression test. I got 120 on all three. Also, on muffs, it started up the first time i tried unlike when i was in the water.

So far, i changed the gas, add water seperator, check spark, check for fuel in cyclinder, and check compression. all are ok.
