About a year ago while giving my MILs car a once over before she took off for her quilting weekend I noticed that the positive battery cable had corrosion on it.

Knowing that corrosion will follow under the insulation I cut it about three inches up on both cables. Both were clean above the connecters.
Cut both connecters off.
Took battery out and cleaned with baking soda.
Even used baking soda on the bare cables just in case.
Put new connecters on.

(a year later)
Last weekend when checking the car out for the same trip again.
The positive cable has even more corrosion!
Built up to about the size of a golf ball.

Should I have used grease on the cable connecters after replacing?
Would that of helped?

1990 VW Fox

Thanks

Moisture. Grease would have stopped alot of it. Some marine grade cables are tinned inside the jackets to prevent this. I still grease the battery terminals the same way we did in the service. Re-clean, re-install and you could spray lithium on the exposed portions of the cable and terminals.

yes it would have helped, but could it be over charging causing more than normal amounts of acid to be on top of the battery? Or leaking around the post,,,,

Sounds pretty excessive but have you tried using those little felt anti-corrosion pads that go under the connectors? I use them on all my batt's and they seem to keep things real corrosion free.

I had exactly the same problem in my Jeep. A nice Die Hard battery, with brand new gold plated terminals and 2/0 marine battery cable. Cleaned everything and replaced the terminals twice, kept coming back. Then I realized the battery was leaking just slightly where the positive terminal comes through the plastic case. Replaced it with a nice Hawker battery and everything still looks shiny and new.

Re: Battery connecter corrosion 1990 VW Fox

Thanks guys for the help.
I remembered the grease thing from all the years in the military which is why I asked.

Going to be doing this Monday afternoon.
As in today since it just turned midnight here :)
Yes on the felt pads also.

Good idea's about checking around battery posts and over charging.

Will try to get back here tomorrow evening to let you all know what I found.

MIL was over for dinner this evening and asked if I had got any answers about her car.
So I had her read this post.

77 year old Granny made me promise to thank you all.
