What is the correct way to run a Force 85 out of the water? Do I use the muffs, and if I do, where do they go?
Year is 1987
HP is 85

on the lower unit
look for the screen holes either in-line with prop or just above it

Muffs really don't work well on Force motors, due to the placement of the water intake holes.

It would be better to get a tank of water to run it in.
You can get a 75 gallon livestock tank for about $45 around here.

d:) Ok, thanks for the great info. Looks like I'll get myself a tank to run the motor in. I would hate to damage the motor by running it with the muffs. Can't afford another motor right now.

Yeah the muffs on the market dont work. I ended making a set out of some copper pipe. You cant go wrong though with a good old tank of water.

Why on earth would you want to run your outboard out of the water man....No matter how highly one thinks their outboard...they just don't do a very good job of moving your boat along on land...Trust me....tried it...it just don't work. Save yourself a headache and some possible odd looks from passerbyers and use your motor the way it was intended...in the water...You can even quote me on that too.

Matthew...Well I just wanted to be different. I got tired of ending up in the same bays and seeing the same old stuff time after time. I figured if I could get this thing to run out of the water I would have more sight seeing opportunities, plus with no water to slow me down I could probly get 55mph out of this old 85hp motor. The water seems to slow me down.

Just remember to shut off the motor when you pull up to the drive thru at Mc Donald's , they can't hear you with it running. It seems hard enough as it is to get your order right without an outboard running in the backround.

I have the same need. How deep does the shaft have to be submerged inorder to work ok. Might be a problem getting deep enough. Should I take off the prop before running in the tank. Thanks

Run it as deep as it would naturally be on the lake. Don't take the prop off.

The motor should be submerged in water, so the water is above the anti-ventilation plate.

Roscoe, Ok, how fast can I run the motor, It seems like it would cavitate with the prop still on it a relatively small tank? But then I never done it with a large motor either. Thanks Harley

Leave it in neutral and you can run it up to 2000 rpm.

If you put it in gear, better keep it at an idle, or the tank will soon be splashed empty.

i run my force motor out of the water , to make sure that the engine will start , and the water pump will do its job..
of course am sure i will get some , good feed back on this .. i live where it is 51 miles to the nearest lake ( one way ) , price of gasoline etc,,so i always test run and shift motor into gear , i do not bring engine rpm much above a fast idle..
