For maximum protection which of these two methods is best.

Run engine with gas tank connected and stop engine using choke in order to have as much oil within the engine as possible. ?

Or run it with gas tank disconnected until it runs dry and stop by itself ?

Re: Outboard winter storage

From what I have seen posted, leave the fuel in the carbs. Helps so things do not dry out (floats).
I'm sure others will chime in.

Re: Outboard winter storage

I have always run mine dry for upteen years. No varnish buildup or carb problems. One of my motors is a mid sixties Westbend and another a 15hp Evinrude 1973, and a newer 15 hp 1997 Evinrude. It's never been an issue.

I hear so much crap about rusting, floats drying up, etc. and I have yet to experience any of this. If it makes you feel better, put a few drops of mixing oil in the cylinders and crank them over a bit.

Some will say to put in some Stabil into the gas and run it for a while and store carbs full. On a multicarb engines and fuel injection engines it's probably best. On smaller single carb motors...? Whatever.

this had been a debate for the last 50 years., if they were cared for most of both are still running.

tx y'awl ... I like to either learn or improve something new every day.

I have used both methods for storage and never had any problems either. But now using synthetic oil I am more concerned about oil hardening in carb during the winter months if all gasoline is empty and only oil remains in the fuel system. I do use stabill at ALL time.

cheers

cobra 3.0: did I once read that you were going to try the Amsoil HPI with one of your 15 hp ?

If so ... did you notice any improvement or changes with the motor's performance ?

No, haven't tried it yet. I'm still trying to use up all my Wallyworld oil. I am still running Amsoil in ou Polaris 2 stroke quad. I still like it because of less smoke...and the smoke that there is when you are following it ,isn't as thick and stinky. (Less harsh on the nose and throat.)

Re: Outboard winter storage

Cobra: donno if you remember my post on that subject, which created a lot of incredibility. But here is what turned out on my Johnson 9.9
1. Quieter 2. smoother idling 3. more rpm at wot
basicaly behaved like a 12 hp.
I am curious to know what the results would be on a higher compression 15 hp ... but since you are in my region I guess we'll have to wait until spring to compare notes on that. lol

By the way I have odd reasons for owning 2 small OB Johnson 9.9 & Force 15 ... what's your excuses for have so many of them ? LOL

Cheers

Re: Outboard winter storage

I have a 3.5 hp Westbend(our first motor ever) for our first "boat" 15 ft freighter canoe which we still have. A 15 hp 1973 rude on our small pontoon boat that was sold to us with our cottage, a 15 hp 1997 rude for use on either our 13.5 ft Princecraft Cartopper or 12 ft fiberglass boat(also came with cottage) and a 16 ft 1986 Peterborough 3.0 for skiing and water toys...and a older Minncota trolling motor for a large inflatable dinghy.

Have also owned a 7.5 Merc, 18 hp Merc, and 30 hp Johnson. It's half a lifetime of boating for different times and uses.

Cobra 3.0: My OB ownership history is as follow ... lol

Evinrude 4 hp - Evinrude 6 hp - McCullock 9 hp - Merc 4hp - Evinrude 7.5hp - Elgin 3hp - Clinton Jet 6hp -Chrysler 6hp - Johnson 15 hp - Evinrude 25 hp - Merc 115 hp

Remaining are a 1981 Johnson 9.9 hp (bought new)
and a 1997 Force 15 (almost new)

Boating has been part of my life huh ! LOL

NB: tried the Amsoil HPI with the Force but saw no improvement in performance except perhaps a bit less smoke and not so bitter smell. I have reasons to beleve there will be a major difference on a 15hp Johnson due to the way they are built.
