I have a 2000 150hp johnson sea pro. The problem I'm having is, I keep getting a low oil warning light and horn on my system check gauge. The oil tank is 3/4 full and I've checked the wiring to the motor. My question is, How do I check the sending unit? When I put an ohmmeter across the two terminals where the black wire and the tan w/blk go I don't read anything in ohms.

The sending unit is just a switch, controlled by a float inside the tank. It is either open or closed, and by your post, yours is closed. Simple to change, four screws and some ty-raps.

While your at it, get rid of the old oil. I'll bet there is some water in there.

When you say you don't read "anything" in ohms, do you mean you are getting a 0.0 reading on your meter or are you showing an open switch by getting "NO" reading?

If you are showing a 0.0 or something almost that, then your showing a closed switch, if you are getting no different reading than when you start, then your showing an open switch.

Re: Testing oil sending unit. (vro)

My ohmmeter is reading infinity, as if my leads are separated. I've since removed the float assembly from the tank and noticed the small rod where the float is located, the rod seems to be frozen and the small disk which I guess makes up the switch contacts is only wobbling in that position. When I connect my meter and set it on ohms, if I position this disk so it makes contact I do get zero ohms. So it seems the float is stuck causing my problem, does this sound correct?
