Greetings, New poster here after finding your website yesterday.
I got my motor running again after about 13 months of sitting. The last couple of times I had it out the tilt was being finiky, but still worked 95 percent of the time. I had a fuel issue that last time i had it out and thus it sat waiting for me to get to it.
According to the model number it is a 1981 140 Evinrude. This is all new to me so bare with me.
Right now the problem I am having is that the trim will work great everytime. Yesterday when i started working on the boat the motor was in the up position. I tried to lower it and it would not lower. After finding what looked to be a drain hole on the left (looking at motor from rear) which I opened up very little "milky" looking substance came out and I put the plug back in. I found the fill hole on the right side and tok the plug out and saw nothiing inside.
I went to Walmart and bought two bottles of trim fluid. I put 3/4 of one bottle into the fill hole and a little poured out slowly. I put the plug back in and then after few seconds running (trim motor) it started going down. I could not get it back up but stopped with it there as I needed to clean the carbs and I got the engine down to do that.
Today I went to actually start it and look at the trim/tilt. After reading on here about how to run it up and down then check the fluid level I tried that. It is real finiky on when it wants go up and down... sometimes one way witl work and sometimes the other way will work. Trimming doesnt seem to have a problem. I hear the tilt motor running everytime I try up and down.
After a bit I got it to go up and down sporadically playing with it, I checked the fluid level. When I took the fill cap off fluid came pouring out of it like it was over full. I let it come out and tried again and it was still not constant (either working or not working) I tried to manually lift it a couple times with and without using the manual screw (screw on the side). The fluid still seems the same level at the fill hole.
I have been through page after page tryign to figure this out. I seems like I cannot get it to purge the air out of the system or something. Like I said sometimes the tilt will work and sometimes it wont with the motor clearly working (making noise) and the trim working through the full motion of trim everytime 100%.
So, Any ideas?
