Hi There

I have a 454 Mercruiser, and my husband took the fuel pump off. The problem is he can't get it back on. :} Are there any tricks to getting it installed?

Thanks

Re: Fuel Pump

So, what model 454 is he working on? Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo?
What Year?
Mechanical or Electric pump?
If mechanical does it fit on the block or a raw water pump?

Re: Fuel Pump

If its a Mechanical pump, theres a rod that works off the Camshaft. Look in the hole where the pump goes. See a rod? Push it up, and it will slide back down. Thats your problem. The Pump lever has to go underneath that rod, and your just hitting it when you try to put it in. Push the rod up, hold it up with a screwdriver, slide the pump in, and OK to go. Grease up the gasket to the pump or block first to hold it in place.

Re: Fuel Pump

If it happens to be the Block Mounted Fuel Pump,.........

Sometimes a Glob of Grease will Hold that Rod Up out of the way.......

But,.... As Don says,.... There are Several Different 1s.......

Re: Fuel Pump

If it mounts in the block, you can hold the rod up with a bolt lightly screwed into the hole shown in the pic, while you mount the pump. Just be sure to remove the bolt once pump is installed.

If it's mounted on the raw water pump be sure the cam lobe that drives the pump is up, as the down position asserts pressure against the pump lever creating a difficult install.

Reel Poor is dead on correct. even if its mounted to the block as in the pic it will help to turn the motor so the rod is all the way up.
remove the short bolt and replace with a longer one, just finger tight.

also rember to use some gasket maker or thread sealer when rplacing short bolt.

and rember the camshaft turns half crankshaft speed so dont be suprised if u need to turn a complete revolution or more.

Thanks Everyone

I am sure it didn't help that we were doing this in 100KM/HR winds! It was just cold and miserable.

Boy, was I right when I said he is a clown:}. Not sure if this goes here or stupid human tricks, BUT..he took the fuel pump off because the engine wouldn't start after we replaced a fuel line, and he couldn't figure out why. After paying someone $250.00 to put the fuel pump back on, it still wouldn't start. About 10 minutes later, he realized the vacuum line and fuel filter were not on. All that trouble, since he didn't check to see if everything was back on.
