Ok, changed the oil last night before dark. It was a breeze since installing a remote filter. Not a mark on my body.

Went out this morning to drain the block, $$%$%%$@!!!
Job done several scratches and bruises later.

One of you HAVE to design a "REMOTE BLOCK DRAIN" kit.

Mercruiser has a single point drain system on their new 3.0L. I wouldn't trust it, though. It can still clog up and you might think you've drained all the water, but you haven't.

Man, you're missing the point. Getting bruised & banged up working on the family machinery (and honey, look how much money I'm saving us) is usually good for one or two "sympathy snarlin's" ???

Which system do you have that is difficult to drain? The merc 3.0 is pretty easy as it is.
Besides, its easier to take pride in your work when its hard!

But stevieray, we could install the kit, not tell her about the cost, and then simply sit in the boat and drink beer while it drains, tell her how hard it was and still get the sympathy. That could work, right?

If I was that smart, I wouldn't be sitting here ;)

QC,
You are forgetting about the bumps and bruises stevieray was talking about. So you need to have a few too many beers and fall out of the boat, then you can go inside. Also, covering yourself with a little bit of dirt would help.

Bilge Rat Yorkie
Has anyone trained their yorkie or cat to remove the sparkplugs and open drain cocks on a dual engine setup?
If so, can I rent him? My old, big behind just won't fit in the engine compartment without serious injury.

Re: Innovation required

Just for fun, since KRS started it. I've owned at least one boat since 1984. I have NEVER drained a block . . . I leave the muffs on her and go out and start every month or so during the winter. We do freeze a couple of times a year, but just barely.

Re: Innovation required

Let the girls solve it guys!

There are two ways to deal with this problem,

1. Get a bilge heater. No draining necessary. Very little electricity to run (unless you live in Fargo and it's winter all year).

2. Move to Florida!

See ya all on the Gulf New Year's Day!!!!! LOL

Re: Innovation required

all gm blocks have drain plugs at the bottom of the block, just above the oil pan.

take the plugs out, and replace them with brass niples on both sides. run heater hose up from the niples to a Y fitting and then to a through hull flush fitting. you can just use a cap if you want, but i installed a brass shut off valve on the transom side of the flush fitting.

can use any type of pump to pump the water out whenever you want.

also great for flushing the engine at the dock when you cant take the boat out of the water for those overnighters at a sea side hotel. just plug in the hose and flush away without the engine running.

i also use mine to pump in antifreeze when the boat is not in use. then pump it out again when i want to go out, and store it.

BTW, why are you bothering with an oil evacuation system on the oil filter? all marine engines have dip stick tubes that go to the bottom of the oil pan. just pump it out there. they sell fittings that fit over the top of the dip stick tube just for this purpose.
