4.3 Mercruiser frozen

Good day, I recently bought a 1988 Sunbird with a 4.3L mercruiser and Alpha outdrive. The guy I bought it from did not properly winterize the boat, and surprise, something cracked-getting water in the crankcase. My question is; Is there something that commonly cracks or do I just need to pull it apart and check everything? I'm thinking it's probably the engine block. Thanks for any advice- I'm originally from Florida and we don't do the winter thing.

It could be a number of things that were damaged.Exhaust manifolds,heads,block...who knows.
Pull the heads and go from there.

Good Luck. Welcome to Iboats!

if you have water in the crank case, that would not freeze up the motor.

if, you have water leaking past your risers into your cylinders, your rings will rust solid to the cylinder walls and create a 600 lb boat anchor out of your engine.

chances are, its water intrusion through the cylinders, and not a cracked block, all be it, the result is the same,

the engine is toast. there is no fixing it.

you can pull the plugs and soak the cylinders in liquid wrench for a couple days, then put a pry bar or pull handle on the crankshaft bolt and see if that will free it up.

but even if it does, it will be short lived. you think your cylinders are leaking into oyour oil now, wait till you disolve what is left of the rusted rings with liquid wrench..........you might even get it started and your denial will kick in and tell you you can live with a little blue smoke, and milkshake colored oil.........

1988, if thats the origonal motor, then it has lived well past its life expectancy. the origonal owner probably knows it too. welcome to the bane of used boats.

fastest way to tell is pull the heads. then start looking online for a new long block, or a complete motor if your not handy with a wrench.

4.3's like to crack at the lifter gallery, but all the other places listed above possible.

When you say the engine is frozen, do you mean it will not turn over at all - "frozen".... or that it froze at some point and cracked getting water inside - but that the crank will turn over?

It froze with water in the block. To tell the truth I haven't even tried to turn the engine over. There is water evident on the dipstick. My next move is to pull the manifolds, then the heads, and finally the block-Inspecting everything as I go. What do you think?

Well they used to pull the whole thing apart and flux it, or is that no longer done?

I'm Sure that as soon as the Intake Manifold is removed,.....
The Cracks will be Very Apparent.....

V-motors are known to Crack in the Lifter Valley.....

There,+ along the sides of the Crankcase........

You need a New Block at the Very Least,...........
A Complete Bobtail Engine would make Alot More Sense.........

Hey Bondo - I know the small blocks are the same for boats and cars / trucks. What about the 4.3? I am assuming the same holds true?
