I have a 97 Johnson 70 two-stroke. How do I remove the steering cable/rod from the engine?

A friend of mine suggested that I "beat it with a hammer until it comes out". I try not to beat things with hammers when I know nothing about them. Thanks

Trouble with beating it with a hammer is you will soon mushroom the end, making it impossible to get it out. At least cushion it with a piece of hardwood or something.

I guess you don't need to be told that you never should have let it get to this point, huh? At least, let this be a warning to others. Removing the steering and cleaning and lubricating the tube is part of preventative maint. And a real buggar if you don't.

I just went throught this. Check out the really thight steering thread and the streering really thight thread. they will have all the answers. seafoam spray or pb blaster and let it sit for a while are keys to success. I also had to remove the motor. There is a thread on pulling the motor that is well worth the time before you start on it. Good luck !
