Hi,

We've got a pontoon boat and the toons have a black sealer/tar or paint on them. It needs to come off so that cold tar can be put on.

Carb cleaner works but I need a homeade concoction since there is so much of it.

Are there any recipes out there? I heard kerosine works but it isn't available.

Thanks.

gasoline will remove it,(the tar) and possibly mineral spirits

If you can heat it enough to soften it up you can get a good bit of it off with a putty knife. That way it won't take so much of the aforementioned solvents to remove the rest.

I found out of I put a propane torch on for a few seconds most of it comes off by scraping. I might grind the rest off to avoid a solvent eating the alumimum, if I don't know anything about it.

Anyhow the torch idea works nicely, a little slow but effective. Thanks.

Grinding, or even Sanding will Eat more Aluminum that Any Solvent,.........Period.........
Some Acids will Eat aluminum,...
But I know of NO Solvents that will attack the Metal itself.......

I'd still like to know Where you could Possibly live,....

why is tar on them in the first place and why do you want to put more tar on them in the second place...??? I have never seen pontoons covered in tar.. I only have been in fresh water and so am not an expert by any means... If salt water eats pontoons then I find it hard to believe that tar will help for a permenant fix.....please inlighten me.......

Soak it all in gasoline, then heat it with a torch.....no, wait a minute......that might not work too well. 8)

You can't get kerosine in Wyoming IL. Ditto Kewanee IL. My brother says he hasn't seen any around Cape Coral either.

I'm not sure whether is is tar, some sort of paint, or aspahlt sealer.

I plan to put cold tar epoxy on it which is as strong as steel and makes pontoons like new. It's about $79 a gallon.

As far as grinding, just enough to get the paint off. Maybe I will check out the solvents again. Grinding is work.

I;m Sure that if you called a Home Heating Oil Supplier in your area,......
You'll find that Kerosine Is, in fact Easily Available........

I think diesel or heating oil is a close match for kerosene
as far as solvent type uses.

Even if you can't find Kerosene at a gas station, Home Depot often carries it. It comes in big cans (maybe 5 gal?).

Are you sure it's tar? VC paint co. used to make a product called " VCtar" that was a bottom coat for glass boats that had blisters.. don't know if it is still around or not.... but in any case, if you can't get kero, use gasoline, it will cut tar just as well... just don't smoke while doing it... if it is a paint, then try some paint removers.... good luck ........

I don't know what it is. Once I get the worst of it off, I'll the luquid route. Grinding gets old quick. This stuff is about 1/4" thick so a little grinding wouldn't hurt.

If it's really tar, soften it with diesel fuel. It's basically a lower grade of kerosene. If it's paint, lacquer thinner would work, but it evaporates quickly. In smaller tight spots maybe some spray on brake cleaner.
