One or two days a week I have the pleasure of staring at a laptop monitor for several hours. I'm sure many of you have it worse! After a long day like this in the office my eyes and head don't feel so good. I had my eyes lasered a couple of years ago so I don't have vision problems. I have been thinking of switching to a larger LCD monitor. Anyone have any experience with this helping?

Re: Computer Monitors & Headaches

I dunno RC. What I do know is that people react differently to computer screens. My daughter uses an IBM laptop as her desktop and claims she can only look at it for a limited time. I'd beg, borrow or steal a different monitor, hook it up and try it for a while.

I personally never have a problem with a computer screen but I do not use a laptop nor do I sit in front of a screen all day.

I'm retired so I have to sit in front of a computer screen all day AND all night. It's an addiction. 95% of the time it's a DELL laptop and no headaches so I can't help.

You should go into your settings and check the monitor refresh rate. Right click on desktop and click properties. On the Settings tab is a button for Advanced. Try to set a higher refresh rate. My gaming rig runs about 85 hz. The lower the refresh rate the worse it is on the eyes.

Only have one choice for refresh rate and its 60hz. We just got a new LCD for our home pc. I think I will borrow that one on my next office day and see what happens.

Have you considered the possibility that it is your vision that is the cause?

I have one pair of glasses that are for reading the 'puter screen only. Other pair for everything else.

CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) has surpassed carpel tunnel for work related disabilities.

If you are wearing bifocal, single vision, or even conventional progressive lenses CVS can compromise your visual comfort.

Task specific progressive lenses maximize the functional intermediate distance for computer use and therefore afford the eyes greater relief than other alternatives.

Some places (mostly optical chains) will try to pass conventional progressive lenses with wider corridors off as task lenses in order to reduce the stock they carry but this does not address the problem. Although many major lens manufacturers now have their propriatary task lens design, some of the task lens designs I have had good success with are Office by Shamir, Business by Zeiss, and RD (Room Distance) by Zeiss.

A good anti reflective process such as Teflon or Crizal Alize will also reduce glare while also increasing visible light transmission.

RC, what is the result of your switching monitors?

Re: Computer Monitors & Headaches

Hi

I work as a consultant, and sits in front of my laptop for 8 hours a day minimum, and I also experience headaches. I have tried to use different types of monitors, and my experience is that everytime I switch monitor, my eyes need some time to adjust and the problem disappears after a while. But now, with my IBM laptop, the problem is there from time to time. The advice from my optician is to look at other objects at different distances from time to time, so that the eyes can change focus. This makes a great difference in my eyes and my head.

Another issue is the background lighting. If you sit in flourescent light while using the PC, you can get beat frequencies between the monitor refresh rate and the flourescent lamps. I use a computer all day long in artificial light. Been doing it for decades without problems. Then one day, I started to get a migraine (blurry vision, nausea etc). I borrow a torchiere lamp with an incandescent lamp as a background light. Problem went away immediately. Many people in the office now use them, when there is no source of sunlight in the office.

Re: Computer Monitors & Headaches

The laptop monitor is a LCD monitor which has none of the flickering of a traditional CRT monitor (the big ones which ocupy half the desktop). The type of light does not have the same impact on these. But in a dark room, the screen appears brighter causing more stress to the eye. In direct sunlight, there is no way you can see whats on the laptop screen. But I agree, the light in the room is of some importance. It must me comfortable and not to bright.
