Hi, brief question, would a 115 hp Johnson be enough to power a 22 ft, CC Aquasport if it was propped right. It had a 175 on it and someone had told me a 140 would do. Thanks!

Actually a 9.9 would push it. It depends what performance you want from it. What is the max recommended for it ? answer this and you are on your way to a decision.

What year Aquasport? I have a 1976 19.6ft Aquasport CC and I got it with a 140hp on it, replaced with a 115, same thing though. Moves out good. Planes real easy. Top speed about 30 with just me in it.

I don't know what year but I think 1977. It's a pretty big boat and looks heavy. I'm just going locally(LI Sound) short trips. My main concern is if the boat will get up on plane and go maybe 25 knots without burning the motor out. Thanks again!

Just like you said. Prop it right.

I also think that you should take it close to the max HP. If you do not then you will always wonder how much more you would have got with the extra HP. 25 knots is great till that is all you can do. At that point you will probably wonder just how much more power, speed and hole shot you could have got with the biggest HP, propped right and balanced properly. However you will save a little on gas going smaller and sacrificing some performance.
Difficult decision, a lot of people I know have done the same thing with their boats. They were content with their "middle of the road" choice of outboard for a very short time then traded up and lost themselves a fair amount of money on the deal or stuck with what they had and are not happy.

From my personal experience, I would say no, 115hp is not enough. It is only enough until you need more in an emergency and it will hurt you resale value being so underpowered. I think you would well to look at the 150 Suzuki or 150/175 E-Tec. Running around inside the sound you would be able to cruise at midrange RPM and get much better performance and fuel economy and the motor will last twice as long.
If it were my boat, I would go with a 225HP motor. Just my preference.

I'm with Gary. I think you'd be underpowered. I have a 175 on a 19' center console and I need every bit of that hp running the inlet in snotty weather. Stu

I agree with Gary and Stu. Engines run more efficient at midrange and in rough seas, you need the extra power to control the boat. Also if you need to race a storm to shore, 20-25 mph top end isn't going to get it.

I have raced storms before and lost due to inadequate power; not fun. Have also raced them in different boats and have gotten home safely ahead of the whitecaps chasing me due to ample power.

I know a 22 footer is a big boat relatively speaking, but not that big.

My 2c,

Mark

Thanks alot for feedback,I think a 115 was a real stretch. I have access to a 225hp which sounds right. The fact is I got the boat for free and I have a 115 (from another)but I realize now that it just won't be enough. Once again I really appreciate the help and feedback,Thankyou all!!!
