High Gloss Non-Skid

I have just painted the interior of my boat with West Marine Non-Skid Enamel. It dried to a high gloss finish which will be reflective of the sun. What can I put on this finish to dull it down a bit. I need a second coat to complete the coverage. Can I paint over it with a satin finish or something other than the same as the first coat and it adhere to the first coat of paint? I can't sand the non skid (as every paint I've looked at recommends for proper adhesion) without removing the non-skid.

What is in the paint to make it anti-skid? If its sand, mabey you can add more to the paint. Or mabey you can use an off white.

It seems like sand that is in the non-skid but what ever it is, it floats to the surface of the can and has to be mixed well before each pour. It was in the paint when purchased. My problem is that I need to put on a second coat for adequate coverage. I do not need more non-skid since it is more than rough enough now (maybe to rough for tender feet now). Is there a compatable paint to put over the West Marine non-skid oil based enamel. Will an exterior floor and porch paint adhere to the oil based enamel?

Pour it through a paint filter, that will remover the grit. If you need to sand the first coat of nonskid use a stiff wire brush, the second coat of paint will fill in some of the surface and make it easier on the feet.

trying to get any type of paint to properly adhere to high gloss, is hard with out completely sanding. maybe take some liquid sand to it to knock the gloss down, or deglosser. and recoat. available at the big stores like HD.

I forgot to add that you can get gloss reducers at auto paint and industrial paint stores.

Any help on putting a splatter coat on using paint? On a practice piece, today I tried it with paint brushes, squeeze mustard bottles, dish liquid bottles and other things but none left me with a finish I was happy with. The manufacturers use gel coat with a webbing effect additive in a gun. I plan to use paint somehow.

try taking the 4" paint brush, cut 1/2 the length of the brisells off, so it's fairly stiff, then with a pair of gloves, dip the brush, and run you finger across the brisells, so it flicks the paint off. just get the paint on the tip of the brush.

oil eater spray bottle, or any one that is for spraying thick stuff with an adjustable nozzle, do some heavy and then mist it to even it out.

You should be able to get a webbing addative for the paint at an auto paint store, the stuff for gel coat may work too, but I've never tried it.

Re: High Gloss Non-Skid

I tried a 4" brush and tried slinging it like slinging out water after it is washed. The short bristle trick is one I will try. tashasdaddy, have you tried that? The spray bottle did not work to my liking. To much of a stream with the nozzle I had. The local paint and body recommended I try a fiberglass supply. I read somewhere on another site that someone tried the webbing solution for gelcoat in paint and received good results. It's not much money for the solution but I'll just need order since none has been found locally. Either way, all my scrap wood is getting all decorated up with the color I bought for the splatter coat due to my trial runs.
