I don't think the 6 horse will do that. My wife suggested she run the motor and I act as ballast in the front. Was that a shot?

Most of the 12' aluminum boats would not even plane on a 6HP and are rated for max 10hp, so I would have to believe that a 6HP is minimal for your older 10' boat.

I have a 2001 Princecraft 12' that weighs 90 pounds, stripped. Coming up-river with a 6HP is slower than walking backwards

You must have a heck of a current. We used to plane a 12ft flat bottom steel boat with a 5hp Gale with a tiller extension.Planed easily and ran about 15 mph with a 180 pounder driving.

Re: over horsed?

Our waters are tidal and my boat is a semi-vee, steelspike.

I have a 6HP 1965 Johnson that has been with me since new. It has pushed a lot of different boats including sail.

I was just trying to say that a 6 is probably not too much for his boat, and it should be enough in wind or current.8)

I sold my neighbor an 84 4hp Johnny, on a 12 foot Alum Row, and with 2 cinder blocks in the bow, it planes out fine. Next step is to use that as a kicker where it is, and stick a Blown Hemi V-Drive where the middle seat is...maximun horsepower is just a start 8)

jon boats tend to be a lot stronger than other boats. I wouldn't hesitate on putting a six on that boat. I wouldn't even think twice about a 9.9. A 15 Might be a little on the heavy side though.

Get a shortbox 7.5 HP Elgin or McCulloch. If it's to much for the kids you can de tube it to 6 HP.

Re: over horsed?

in looking at the boat today again I did find a hp rating plate on it. It is rated for 295lbs and 3.5 horse. I like another find it odd it has three seats but only rated for 295 lbs. I weigh 220 my wife weighs 120 so without anything we have overloaded it before putting a 65lb motor and 40+ lbs of gas and tank in it. I am going to play with it nonetheless.
