How to See who owns and who hosts a Website

Can someone describe the ways to determine who is hosting a particular website.....all the way from the hosting ISP through the "backbone supplier" to the net.

Secondly; is it possible for a website to be set up in such a way as to keep that information from being available to the public? If so; how is that done?

Knowing where to find this information and; perhaps help in deciphering the information once it is foound would be appreciated.

There are several tools available for getting information about domains or troubleshooting connections.

These used to be UNIX commands but many of them work in Windows now. To make it even easier, there are web sites you can go to to plug in the info. I don't know of any one place that just hands over that information, but using several tools you can learn a lot.

WHOIS: Gives information about a domain.

TRACEROUTE: Shows each "hop" from where you are to the destination.

NSLOOKUP: gives information about hostnames, domain names, and ip addresses (reverse).

www.dnsstuff.com has all of these tools and more

Try it out. It's amazing how much information there is.

But; what does it mean when the last step(s) in a traceroute simply say "UNKNOWN FIREWALL NOT RESPONDING"

I must admit, I don't exactly know. It would seem that the device at that hop is configured to not respond to certain ICMP and UDP messages. That makes it hard to explain how the trace continued past it. Maybe someone else will come along and educate us both. I better read up b/c I should know this stuff.
