White sludge from exhaust

Hey all

My 1968 18hp evinrude runs like a champ, especially after all the help I received from this forum.

Thanks

With that said...I use the motor for trolling the local trout lakes with my two boys. After an hour or two after low rpm trolling, I usually take the motor out of gear and throttle up the rpms. My logic is that I'll "blow out" whatever may build up to make the idle rough. Probably not a scientific theory. When I do this, most of the time there is a whitish oily sludge that comes out of the exhaust. Just curious if this is normal...

Also...sometimes when were trolling(rpms are bottomed out) the motor will just die. No sputtering or coughing it will just die out. I've tweaked with the low idle rpms and mixture to improve it a little, but every now and then it will happen.

I use the motor about once or twice a month. If I don't get it out on the lake I will run it in a barrell just to keep things fresh. I use fuel stabilizer and dont bother to disconnect the fuel line. Figured there was less chance of contamination if I kept the line attached. Any maintenance advice for me to consider???

Thanks again

Re: White sludge from exhaust

I see no problem...the white junk is just unburnt oil.gas mixing with the water coming out the exhaust. Trolling a lot will build it up too. But no big deal. Probably need to run it under load a little more to get it warm, and burn it out, not just revving it up, but thats OK too. I would suggest a good De-Carb if not done it a bit (in the FAQ's section).
Any motor running at low R's will quit once in awhile...no prob there in my opinion either...your doing fine

1968 18 huh? See that little hose nipple in the lower fwd corner of the lower bypass port cover? That hose carries fuel that has settled out of the airstream in the crankcase, especially at idle. Where does it go from there? Into the exhaust. There it gets emulsified with the cooling water that has gone through the engine. The result is the white foamy stuff you are seeing. What else can I say except it is normal. It is. Newer models ran that hose into the center of the bypass cover where it went into the cylinder to be burned and be more environmentally friendly. Result? Those motors idled like crap. Some people used to reroute it back to the 1968 version to make them idle. But don't tell the EPA.

Thanks to you three.

Yes SCAATY, I feel rather fortunate to get the input from these experts(you included). Considering my location on the map, that is extremely valuable, since there doesn't seem to be many souls around here that know JACK about an old outboard.

Thanks to you all that help us nincumpoops out.

A side note:

Just tore into the lower end of my '57 Johnson 35hp. A little condensation and I'll have to R/R bearings. Other than that and the water pump(which I'll R/R the assembly) a new seal kit will have the L/U ready. From there it will be off to the rest of it...

I'm sure you'll hear my pleadings about the Johnson soon enough.

Thanks again to all, from a greasy fingernailed guy from Siskiyou County California

I remember back in the 70's having to give a Marina owner 20 bucks when he caught me in the back asking a mechanic where a shim for a lower unit went, and the damn boat was bought from him. Vowed to get even ever since, as I detest greedy jerks.
You mention a 35hp Seahorse. I have a 58 Seahorse 35 out back, complete minus the just sold hood, thats coming apart for the the good parts (have the lower) and to Ebay If you could use some parts (if interchangeable) let me know...email Hogrider@Myway.com
