Transparency International is an organization that has been doing extensive annual surveys throughout the world to measure the level of perceived government corruption by the peoples of every country. It’s interesting to see where the United States is ranked.

Of 163 countries surveyed, where do you think the USA ranks for its perceived government corruption?

OK, some of you (probably the Democrats) will curl up and wet your pants just for not knowing, so here’s a link to the 2006 survey results if you can’t wait for me to post the answer:

Just click on [English] unless you are in the USA illegally. In that case, click on [Spanish], then go home.

Re: Perceived Government Corruption in the USA

The USA ranks 20th with a CPI (corruption perception index) of 7.3. The other countries with a 7.3 CPI are Belgium and Chile. A perfect CPI score is 10, the best a country could get. We, the USA, are down 25% on the scale of government corruption!!!

That surprised me. I would have guess the USA would have been in the top 10 countries with a much lower level of corruption. The countries that are doing better than the USA are:

Country - CPI score

Ireland – 7.4
France – 7.4
Japan – 7.6
Germany – 8.0
Hong Kong – 8.3
Canada – 8.5
United Kingdom – 8.6
Luxembourg – 8.6
Austria – 8.6
Netherlands – 8.7
Australia – 8.7
Norway – 8.8
Switzerland – 9.1
Sweden – 9.2
Singapore – 9.4
Denmark – 9.5
New Zealand – 9.6
Iceland – 9.6
Finland – 9.6

Finland, Iceland, and New Zealand are the best countries with the lowest level of perceived corruption.

It really hurts that France, Honk Kong, and expecially the communist to the north, Canada, have less corruption than the United States of America...and not by a little bit! Immediate below the USA is Spain, Barbados, and Estonia. In an attempt to help me feel better I looked up Mexico:

Mexico – CPI 3.3, 70th place.

Ok, now I feel a little better. But wait! If the CPI of 3.3 is creeping in over our southern border, and they make their way into our government...

Please note: Perceived does not equal Actual.

I wonder where North Korea is on the list.

I think you have to define corruption first. If you mean, is the government littered with lieing, cheating, stealing, two-faced, name-calling, hippocrites, then the US should be higher on the list. Are they out to get us? No, they're in it for themselves a lot of them, but it's still corrupt.

That was my first impression, too, when I read the report. But then I realized there is no way to measure actual corruption. I’m thinking the results might be more accurate than I first gave them credit for.

It isn’t, yet.

Countries or territories with only one set of data are: Andorra, Anguilla, Aruba,
Brunei, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Kiribati, Liechtenstein, Martinique, Netherlands
Antilles, North Korea, Solomon Islands, St. Kitts & Nevis, Solomon Islands, Tonga,
Vanuatu and Virgin Islands (US). For all of the above countries / territories, at least
two more sets of data are necessary for inclusion in the CPI.

South Korea – 5.1 (42nd place)

Russia – 2.5 (121st place)

There are some countries on the list that I have never heard of and have no clue where they are in the world:

Myanmar
Togo
Benin
Eritrea
Suriname
Gabon
Mauritania
Lesotho
Mauritius
Bhutan

Sorta fascinating, some of the countries that did best have lax drug laws. I guess legalizing an element that causes corruption helps somewhat.

Good one, DR. The fact that they have legislated all of the above to be legal by the word of the law does not negate the fact that it is corrupt.
