Re: mercruiser 470 series

Well.you bought it.Maybe some one else will.

On the otherside of the coin ...... What's going on with it? Are you using it and how does it run? Are you having problems with it?

If no problems use it !!!

Think about this .Just about all the boats on this board need work/help .There are Force L drives,OMC stringer drives,Ficht engines.Force motors period .Not too many Chryslers,Old OMC electric shift gearcases.Mercruiser drives without trim and tilt.

So if you need answers go ahead and ask.You may be not as bad off as you think.

If it's Runing Good Now,.........

Unload it on Somebodyelse,...... While it Still Is.......

Then find a boat with a Chevy based engine.............

If that 470 Hasn't bitten you in the A$$ Yet,............. It Will.............

that engine dont even have cam bearings in it. unless its been rebuilt by a shop. then its been bored out and bearings drove in. I would name that one for-sail

Where do you guys come up with this BS. The 470's have cam bearings. Look at #9 in this link.

Re: mercruiser 470 series

im no expert don. but ive taken apart two of these engines before that didnt have the bearings. maybe some mix up somewhere but there were no cam bearings in them. i know bearings are availible but the cam bore had to be machined to install them. ill try to find more about it. i may have the engines confused but.

Re: mercruiser 470 series

the 470 was iffy when new.
if yours has been updated to the 4" heat exchanger and the aluminum exhaust manifold and a belt driven altenator its not so bad. if it hasnt I would sell it while its running well or start saving for a 4.3 bobtail engine.
you still may have to face the leaking circulating pump seals but that is repairable as well.
the biggest issues were cracked exhaust manifolds, blown head gaskets due to the open deck design leaking circ pump seals and the charging system.

Re: mercruiser 470 series

hmmm thanks for the info., i believe it has the 4" exchanger, and I already put on the alt. conversion kit., i'll really look over the manifold, just worried about the gaskets for the circ. pump and head gasket

From the Belts, back to the Coupler,+ Everything In-between......

Re: mercruiser 470 series

From what I've read about 470's the alternator is a common issue. I've also heard that they are strong and good engines. I've got several old boats and ALL have their own problems after 20 or so years. The 470 is no different. If you like it then run it till it dies! I've got a complete 470 that I took out of a boat I stripped for parts if anyone is interested. Never started it but it supposedly was running when I got it from a used car lot after someone broke out all the windows....
