Hello, I got a slow leak from one of my steel-braided hoses right where it goes into the hydraulic cylinder. I just had the drive off for replacement of shifter cable, And dont have the money to replace the hose yet. So what is a cheap oil I can use for the hydraulic trim and tilt, the omc oil is like $10 a small bottle and about 20 miles away from me to buy. What oil can I use ? Its a 87 cobra 2.3. Thanks

the oildyne and prestolite used by mercruiser can use 10-30 or 10-40 according to the mercruiser manual. dont what pump you have tho. a good manual should give you an alternative (for emergencies).

I think well just use the 10-30 rather than paying out the arse for mercruiser products.

If it were my boat, I wouldn't be running it with a leak in the first place. Just wait and get your line fixed before you use your boat anymore.

Tranny fluid is what you want to use.

Ayuh,...........

You Just need a New Line Now,........

Keep runing it,+ it'll be needing Possibly Rams or a Pump.......

If Oil is leaking Out,....... Water will be Leaking IN.......

not sure about OMC. mercruisers dont have to tho. I just replaced 3 and ordered the 4th. plain old back hoses were only 19 bucks. braided stainless from merc were $33. we already had one new stainless in the package and the two i bought online turned out to be black rubber and poly cord.

Ill have one black and one stainless one each side, doesnt look bad.

Look around online, not sure if Iboats will have stainless.

If one hose is bad might as well repalce them all as they are likely same age. The inners are probably ok as they dont flex and they dont get sun and water.

Plus when you fix the leak the OMC service manual states you can use regular ATF in the system.

5200 Does NOT stick to an oily surface, and was never designed for or expected to repair hydraulic pressure hoses or fittings or the cylinder itself. Who knows, if you cleaned the area with Acetone, maybe, just maybe it will keep rain water out. But that is all that repair will be good for.

Hey - since its an OMC the one thing that nobody has mentioned here is that those hoses use tiny o-rings ate the ends to seal them. If its leaking where it screws in and they haven't been replaced in a long time they leak! And a very small o-ring is alot cheaper than an new hose anytime! Just my 2 cents worth!
