Any significant different between a 40HP Big Twin and a 40HP Lark?

Re: Lark or Big Twin

In 1965, Models 40502A-M, 40503A-M Manual Start and models 40552A-M, 40553A-M Electric Start Are all BIG TWIN Evinrudes.

And also in 1965,

Models 40562A-40563A and 40572A-40573A are LARK Evinrudes.

I believe that the Lark models were Electric Shift in 1965, but that the Big Twins were manual shift..

Basically the same engine. The Lark was the one with the richer feature set, i.e. I'm not sure you could get a Lark with a tiller handle, or a Big Twin with a thermostat. Course all that depended on the year.

As said, depends on the year. Early ones were just trim. Then the Larks got electric shift and generators as standard, along with trim. (That is "trim" as in decoration, not "trim" and in power trim)

the early larks had compression release heads for easier pull starting, I dont think the standard had this, as I have seen heads without the extra valve.

Re: Lark or Big Twin

i 386, thanks for response about the 120hp Johnson & boat I have been looking at. I have a 1969 evinrude 40 hp electric foot motor in good running condition, and a same era, slightly older 40 hp manual foot johnson, not froze up, but I have not attempted to start. The operational motor is on a 1973 151/2 ft monarc. Would you be interested?

Re: Lark or Big Twin

I know you didn't know any better, but it's a no no to trade on this forum.

But to answer your question, I'm not looking to buy one just yet. I've got a '69 33HP rude that's going on my project boat that I hope will be a good match for it.

What actually sparked my curiosity about the 40HP was for something hopefully on down the road. I want to build by own boat and the plans I was looking at were for 40HP max. The boat is a classic design so it deserves a classic motor. I can't think of anything I'd rather have on it besides an Evinrude or Johnson. I knew the 40 came in a Big Twin or Lark but didn't know what the difference was. Electric start/choke is a must, but electric shift is something I'd rather not have to fool with. Charging system is also not a priority. Simplicity is a priority.

My project boat is a 15 footer. How fast does the 40HP push your 15.5 footer? I'm hoping to make 35MPH with my 33.

Thanks for the info, I saw that after I sent you the msg, I have not had the boat in the water, been too affraid of getting caught out c/o the electric foot. Previously had a 14 foot with a similar hull to yours with a newer 30 horse 'rude that would top out around 25+, I think your hull should be more efficient, so it should top out in the lower 30's. Have you considered looking for a bolt on tilt/trim kit, it should make a huge difference.
