Blocking diode? Do I read this correctly? Blocking diodes were used in older motors with hydro-electric shift as part of the shift supply circuit. Your '87 wouldn't have one of those. Or are you speaking of something else?

The power packs have their blocking diode inside them.

The warning system has a blocking diode inside the wiring harness.

The shift interupter circuit has a blocking diode wired into the cable from the switch body.

Your '87 225 has a total of 4 blocking diodes.

Seahorse5,

So that means when I am getting erratic spark in the spark plugs that could be caused by the blocking diodes being bad in the power packs??

Compression is: 90 -/+ 4
Carbs rebuild and linkage and are ajusted
good timing
new plugs and wires.
spark coils all with in ohm reading spec.
Good timing sensor did ohm meter readings
no ozoing coming out of the charge coil.

Are the flywheel magnets loose?

No.. they are good. I check them too. Took off the fly wheel just to double check.

You have to go thru the service manual troubleshooting steps to find out what is wrong with your ignition. Pokin', hopin', and buyin' is the long expensive way of solving your problem.

Erractic spark is not always a sign of bad diodes, plus both packs would have to be bad. Usually a bad blocking diode inside a pack will affect the spark from the good pack.

The manual tells how to test the diodes.

Thx seahorse5,

All I know is that the power packs have been on the motoer since the 80's. So It is time to just replace them too.

I know that the coil sensor hardly goes bad? I have never had a boat that had a problem with them, also never had a stator go out either.

I check the cut off switch and the key switch and it seems good.

Over all I think it is worth going through this 225 hp. I feel that If I can get it working it will last another 10 years.

Or until they come out with a deisel outboard motor that gets 10 nmpg. LOL.
