Hello,

I'm trying to decide whether to buy a Yamaha or Tohatsu 8hp 2 stroke outboard. It's to go on a Zodiac 310 Acti-v.

Both weigh about the same, but the Tohatsu is nearly £200 cheaper the the Yam in the UK.

Is there any difference in performance and reliability between the two?

My heart says Yamaha, as my Dad always owned them and had no trouble.

Any opinions?

Cheers,
Mat.

Hi Mat ... welcome to iBoats :) ..... On a inflatable, the yamaha will work the best .... you must never buy something because it is cheaper, always buy the best you can afford ..... the perforamce on yamaha is top class ... follow your heart, stick with what you know, and listen to your dad, he knows best ..... good man .... :)

Yamaha site is down right now but most of their line is at 100:1 fuel mix.I'm not sure about the 8 hp. though.

Yes indeed fuel mix is 100:1.
I think the primary requirement is a good established
dealer close by.

cheers for the replies.

Yes, there's actually good dealers for both nearby.

I ended up going for the Yamaha. I collect it at the weekend.

Saying that though, the spec on the Tohatsu was very good. Slightly higher cc too. I noticed that the 9.8hp is a tuned-up 8hp, and only weighs 26kg.

Mat.

1. Available service is #1 priority.

Oops', you said "2-stroke". The first sentence appiles, as always.

Other than that, you're on your own.

Sorry, #1 pretty much describes it.
