I'm thinking that's a lot of money for a 31 year old 70 horse.

Put it on the hose and run it. Then do a compression check while you watch. Anything that runs is generally worth that much. Without doing either or both of the above you are taking the persons word which you and I both know is a crap-shoot at best. The engine is mounted on a boat -- take it for a spin. If he's reluctant, the flag should be waving.

Re: 1975 70hp information

oh ya he is more then willing to take me for a boat ride, and I said that I want to do a compression test before I buy it, he says it doesn't grind at all shifting gears and that it has never been used in salt, and I do agree that it is much to highly priced but it was OBO so there is obviously some leeway, do these particular motors have any major issues and or problems that I should be looking for or any reason not take make an offer on it at all?

Why is he selling it? You can always tell if the answer is bull or real.

I've seen a couple go on Ebay recently for around $600. $900 is high for just the motor.

Kinda on the high side, but if he has taken care of it and it has really good compression, then it may be ok. It would cost you anywhere from 1000 - 1500 to get one rebored. So if the pistons are knocking or bad compression I would stay clear.

Johnsons are cold starters, or is that just mine....:/

Re: 1975 70hp information

This is exactly the engine (year, hp) that I had to rebuild because the thermostat stuck closed. In your rear view picture, at the top of the head is a small cover, 5 screws holding it in, with a large protrusion at the top and two smaller ones to the lower left.

If you buy it, remove this small cover and replace everything you find under it.

Won't be sorry.

he says hes selling to "finance" a new motor, which is belivable, yet anyone can use that excuse for almost anything....
