I just purchased a 1998 2800 Martinique. The boat has sat in the slip for about 2 yrs. I have scheduled a complete checkup by the harbor mechanic. Could anyone help me compile a punch list of things that should be done? I'm sure he will know what to do but I want to make sure he checks it all. My list so far includes: oil and filter change
coolant flush
replace impellers in outdrives
remove old gas if possible
replace bad batteries if needed (it will be)
test run
I'm still thinkin...

What engine and drive set up? Mercruiser or Volvo Penta

It has dual Volvo Pentas. The engine compartment is the cleanest part of the boat. The outdrives have been sitting there (fresh water) for 2 years and are covered in algae. The previous owner took the boat out a couple dozen times or so since 2001 and it was not even run or serviced since AUG 05. The boat only has 190 hrs (showing) on the counter. I really want to get this initial service right before I get out there.

This should probably be moved to the "Mercruiser, Volvo and OMC I/O or Inboard Engine Problems" forum.

Most if not all of these things listed should be done annually.

If the boat is still in the water it should be hauled out.

Check and repair or replace where needed
thru hulls
bottom paint
if freshwater boat only, anodes should be magnesium

Pull the drives check, repair, or replace where needed
all bellows and inlet water hose
gimble bearings
engine alignment
grease u-joints
grease input shaft splines
pressure test drives
change gear lube
remove prop and grease prop shaft
anodes (magnesium freshwater, aluminum brackishwater, zinc saltwater)

Engines check, repair, or replace where needed
raw water pump; it's belt driven, not in the drive
all rubber componants; boots, belts, and hoses
rust free belt pullys
manifolds and risers
oil and filter
fuel filter(s) may be one in the carb also
thermostats 160*
engine compression test
spark plugs, dist cap, rotor, plug wires
flame arrestor
batteries
battery cables, positive and negative at both ends
electrical connectors; all tight, and no corrosion on terminals
fluid levels; power steering, tilt and trim, trim tab
lube/grease steering tiebar connections

onboard safety systems check, repair, or replace
bildge blowers and hoses
bildge pumps and hoses
fire extinguishers
lights
horn
fuse holders, corrosion free

Note, for canvas snaps and corrosion prevention,
"Corrosion X" works great.

Great Responses...Keep em coming! I guess this thread could have been put in the engine forum. However, my punch list is not limited to engines. Thanks for the help guys! Drewmitch44, when I get that canooter valve checked, I'll be happy to take you for a nice snipe hunt.

Canooter valves are best serviced with a bucket of steam.

Be sure to bring a left handed smoke shifter when you guys try to flush out those snipes.d:)

Start by getting a good marine insurance policy if you don't have one already. Another would be to make sure that you have plenty of room on your credit card.

I didn't see listed having the floor, stringers, and transom inspected for rot. It would be a concern with a moored boat that had tops that leak and any water sat inside for a time. Floor repair can take on a life of its own.

SURVEY!

The harbor mechanic is biased (wants to make money) and is probably not qualified to fully inspect a boat.

A surveyor works for YOU, and makes his money whether the boat needs work or not. He will give you a detailed written report of everything. If you do the survey with him, you will learn a LOT about your boat that you may not know. He will find details like out-of-spec little details that a marine mechanic would just overlook (or not look at to start with).

Get this...after I paid the guy for the boat, I also paid the marina over $3k with a verbal agreement (if I get their money I could keep the slip). Last day of Nov I went to sign the lease and pay the guy's slip as of 11/06. They wanted to put me in another smaller slip. Long and short of it... I have moved across the lake and ordered a trailer but not before getting the cell number of the mechanic who knew I got a raw deal. He said he would be happy to help me shadetree

Hopefully, is boat located an area that doesn't ever get freezing temperatures? Can't believe nobody asked you this before now.

I'm in the deep south but even here it has been very cold. The first thing that I did was put in a light bulb and I ran a cord from my neighbor's power. I have now got my own meter and two XTreme Bilge Heaters. I put one in the engine compartment and one in the compartment with the waterpump/ hotwater heater. The mechinic is coming over to help me next weekend in my new slip. I have tested most of the equipment and eveything seems to be in working order other than one of the outdrive trims.
