Look at amp/hour output too. Total wattage is what gives your power. Some makers raise the voltage while others raise the amperage. Makita's Nickle Metal Hydride batteries are high amp output. Most batteries are Nickle Cadmium which isn't nearly as efficient. I've not tried Makita's new Lithium Ion tools yet.

I needed a low budget cordless drill/driver. I looked around a little and ended up at sears. They have a 19.2Volt drill that hammers for around $120. It came with 2 batteries. You can buy replacement batteries for about $30. Also there are a whole bunch of other tools that take the same battery that you can get as you need them. You can buy them without the battery (you already have 2) and it makes them a lot cheaper. For the Saturday handyman they seem just fine. If your an electrician that needs to wire a house, I would get something a little more on the heavy duty end. I have used the hammer option and it worked fine. It punched a hole through a cinder block without any effort. The chuck is keyless and I really like that. Most come with that option nowdays.

Go to harbor freight...I got an 18vdc drill/driver that has lasted about 5 yrs now with no problems...only cost about 30 bucks and if it falls into the drink..I won't have lost a 300 dollar driver .....it has the same torque as any other driver ........but that's just me...d:)

I have been collecting refurbished 18V Dewalt tools on ebay for the last 3 years and every tool looks and performs like new, plus they still have 1 year warranty.
The XRP hammer drill gets the biggest workout and has successfully completed two home builds with no problems. The only complaint I have is it's a little heavy for a lot of overhead work.

I use a 12V Dewalt for the hard to reach places and over head work and then I also have my 18V Ryobi that I use for everything else. The Dewalt is a great little drill for the size, and its been dropped, worked in the rain and it still kicks, they Ryobi is also a good drill, heavier but battery lasts way longer.

The only problem I can see with the cordless hammer drills are they are heavy, and it drains the battery too quick. Don't waist the money on a 18V Hammer.. not worth it..

My 14v Dewalt (not XRP) has lasted about 6 years so far. I have 2 batteries for it and neither holds a good charge anymore. It also has the mostly plastic chuck and it's starting to have problems. It's not really cost effective for me to buy more batteries and I've never seen replacement chucks for them. It was still a pretty good drill and I wouldn't mind having another one.

We use a lot of cordless drills here at work. They bought some Ryobi drills but they didn't last very long. Currently, the guys here are using the B&D drills. We'll see how they hold up.

DARN! Your correct on the chucks! I have always used a local repair shop that had them. And now they are no longer here.

Not offered by Dewalt.
I'm using the new battery charger "xrp smart charger" 9v to18v
They are still old school NiCads

When they die it only takes about a minute. Arrrg :)

With all of my OCD's, I would still be pondering the perfect drill until March.

My wife suggested a 19.2v Sears drill and light kit for $99.

Seems pretty solid. We'll see.

Thanks for all of your input.

Happy Holidays to all.

I sure like my 18v DeWalt set. Have the skill saw, Hammer drill, right angle drill, grinder, jab saw, and light. Sweet set. Wouldn't own anything else ... and my contractor friends all swear by DeWalt too.
