Cold weather is upon us so it is time to start my winter project. Last summer I aquired the above mentioned motor. It has not been ran in 10 years. I have read the post on awakening a sleeping outboard. and I am raring to go. Last summer I squirted some fuel mixture in the carb and gave it a pull, she fired right up in the basement. (the wife loves it when I do that) Any way the first order of bussiness is to replace the impellar. I have done this on a 1964 5.5 johnson, and a 1965 9.5 Johnson with the help from this board and a seloc manual,( mostly this board) My question is is it reletively the same procedure with the 18 hp or are there some thing I need to look out for? I do have an original service manual for this motor, but it seems to assume that I am real smart. It does not give too much information for the novice. I tried the search feature on this subject it wasn't much help.Any heads up info would be greatly apprecited.

The difference i the procedure of removing the lower unit is only the location of the brass shift connector. Remove the oblong plate from the side of the exhaust housing (hsg between the PH and LU), remove one bolt from the connector, then simply remove the lower unit bolts as you've done on the other engines.

Under the impeller plate, yes. You can apply some to screw threads for corrosion avoidance, for whatever good it does. Make sure you have a good o-ring on the driveshaft splines and apply a bit of waterproof grease to the splines. Lube the impeller and water tube grommet with some oil to make life easier. However, I wouldn't oil the impeller if you are going to let it sit all winter without starting it. It shouldn't do any damage, but-

The only thing I can come up with for under the impellar plate is Indian head gasket shellac compound. I also have an old tube of Permatex high temp rtv silicone. Will any of these work. I would like to finish this today. It seems hard to find a 1000 sealer substitute.

Either one is good enough for that job.
