My 72' Formula 233 has the original 350 omc inboard outboard. Of the three outdrives for this year mine is the second largest. Im not sure if it has 225 or 240 hp. My boot has two small tares on it. It cant be cafe to let that leak and realy on the bilge to pump it out. can anyone recomend a good manual. Has anyone done this change before, can I do it without doing major dismantling? where can I order parts for these old omc engines and outdrives?

Re: 72' formula 233 I/O Boot replacement

It's a simple repair. I have always taken off the drive(very easy) but some have been able to do it by slipping it over it. I suggest taking off the drive though. Make sure you mark the ball gears so you get them back in the same relationship with eachother.

I believe there are various boots with different number of screw holes(16 or 22) depending on the year.

Thanks for the reply
There is a metal gasket on the outside of the hull that has the screw holes and it looks like it secures the boot.. After marking the outdrive what else needs to be loosened to remove the outdrive?

Re: 72' formula 233 I/O Boot replacement

I have recently seen boots for early to mid 70's OMC sterndrives for about $75.00. I have a 74 drive, Part # 313080. I located the number at the bottom of the boot starboard side. I plan to replace my boot this winter and do plan to remove the drive. I am also going to clean up and paint the Intermediate housing and the drive itself. Figure that will be a good time to replace the boot. I may even replace the Screws for the Frame and the Huge Hose Clamp. In addition to Bruceb58's comments, I have read more than once, to disconnect the Battery to the boat before you disconnect the Electric Shift Wire connectors located in the Engine compartment near the Transom. No manuals were available when I bought the boat. I picked up every manual I have off E-Bay. My favorite After Market Manual was Seloc's. I also picked up a Factory Part's Catalogue and Factory Service Manual. Although these three are what I use the most, I still found the Clymer's and even a Service Manual on CD useful.

Call Steve Ryan at 503 282 8807. A more knowledgable OMC guy you will not find. He repairs drives and ships parts all over the country. If you call, tell him Gyro Gearloose sent you.

He's fair and square and knows all the tricks for OMC. If you're going to keep your boat, you'll be glad to know him. If you pump him for information, be sure to order something from him. He'll give you the best info the first time but will remember you if you go order it from somewhere else.

There are several steps to remove the outdrive and it appears to be quite straight forward. BUT, I suggest you at least get an aftermarket or factory service manuel before you start.

Im going to order another manual, I have one know but its more of the scematics that instruction and usable diagrams. The boat is 6 mo new to me and I figure these rips have been there awhile, the leak is managable, I sealed one from the outside with 5200 marine adhesive. to these tares get bigger, the rubber is durable right

If it were my boat, it wouldn't be in the water right now. Not worth the risk.
