Maybe it's time for a new cd drive or time for a "restore" command to bring the computer back to before it happend.

Hi jimr, I had a similar problem. I uninstalled the CD software driver in the start, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, driver, etc. Then I rebooted and WIN re-installed the driver and it worked, this assumes a problem with the installed CD driver, maybe it's corrupted. This is free, only takes a couple of minutes, and you got nothing to lose.

well I have restored and also uninstalled it and reinstalled it with no success. I am really not too impressed with this dell. It is only 2 years old and have had many problems with it.

Replace the cd drive.... cheap fast and effective......provided that is the real problem :( Do you have access to another drive to test it with?? I figure a new cd drive is cheaper than 30 minutes of a tech's labor.
