Hi, any of you paint the sterndrive / prop and which type of paint do you use?
Is it worth it and how long does it last?

No need for anti-fouling paint in that sweet water?

bijou22 - What make/model is your drive & do you keep it in the water or trailer it? My recommendation depends on those answers.

Nope,........

Even my Bottom Paint is Plain ole Rustolium,.....
Brushed,+ Rolled rather than Rattlecans though.......

On the "Sun" side I get just a tiny bit of Green Fur,.......
That's dried up,+ Blown away since I hauled the boats.......
And No Noticable effect on the boat during the summer Either.....
'Course,... It's Out of the water on plane.....

Steve is Right,...... I should have been Asking Questions rather than spouting off about Sweetwater, or Trailer boats.......

Hi stevieray, drive is a Cobra SX 1997 VP and is kept in salt water for around 10 months of the year in the UK.
Volvo spec a spray paint for the stern drive in silver, anybody used it?

Couple more questions.....do you get any buildup of marine growth or barnacles, and can you get in the water to clean it off on a regular basis?

I do get a build up of growth on it, but have recently started using a prop bag which is great. Yes I do use dive gear from time to time to give the hull an inspection and a quick scrape but its a real pain.

Re: Sterndrive painting?

If you can get her into shallow enough water to be able to stand up about waist-deep & do a good brushing off at least once a week, you can possibly use the factory paint or the Rustoleum like bond-o. I do that with my Merc Alpha one & I can keep it relatively clean. If you want to "set it & forget it", you should use an anti-foulant type paint designed for outdrives - not bottom paint (I can post a link if you can't find it here).

Be sure to use a good under water aluminum primer. A zinc chromate primer by Tempo is a popular product you can get over the counter very easily. Part # TEM020421

Interlux makes a great product for antifouling available in a spray can (just be sure to use their primer too INTYPA985;
INT5493A (black)
INT5495A (gray)
INT5498A (white)
