my two cents is a projector.

also I just read an article that said plasma was on its way out only in the US, which is 80% of the plasma market, plasma was the cheapest way to get large screens, but as lcd prices have come down then plasma has lost.

They said the big issue with plasma was it inablity to keep up with fast screen images.

You have some facts confused.
LCD is the technology with bluring during very fast picture action. In the past the refresh rate for LCD was 25ms and now it is down to around 6ms for most manufacturers.
Both plasma & LCD manufactures have opened new plants recently, that's one reason for the large price drop we are all seeing now. The plasma & LCD plants are tring to take market share and establish themselves as the top technologies for the future. This also benifits the consumer with low prices.
The plasma & LCD both have their size catagories that they are winners in for sales numbers (world wide sales).
My brother works for a major TV manufacturer outside the US as a Electronic/Elect. plant dept manager. He feeds me all the industry sales, defect, new technology, etc... info.

I see the biggest issue with Plasma being the "flashes" of color, usually green, during high contrast pictures. Like when a person is wearing a bright white shirt against a black background. DLP suffes from that much more though........"rainbow" effect from the color wheel.

QC It it helps, Samsung and Sony are made with the same LCD Panels. IMHO they offer the best picture

Thanks Pony. I actually pulled the trigger Friday at Costco. Reason being that they DO have a return it for whatever reason you want deal. I had forgotten and then after reading this recalled that we returned a 3 YO 17 inch CRT because the sound was going out. No receipt, no discussion, and walked away with a brand new equivalent. Can't beat that!

I ended up with a 42 inch Vizio LCD for $1299. Not the best, but we are very happy. The boys have already had the PlayStation in and DVD was great. Also, a little surprise for me, the internal digital tuner found all of the digital channels on my cable with no Box. I didn't expect this although it now seems obvious . . . some HD too. Oh and it seems to beat the neighbor's $4000 42" Panasonic plasma he got less than a year ago.

Major Woods. Despite your info connection, I don't think you have made a recommendation?

I did that for a reason, I believe that just like boats there is no such thing as a perfect TV purchase, just a choice depending on your needs and desires. My choice might not be right for you so I gave none. Your own reasearch will point you to the right TV technology, make and model.
Good luck with your purchase!

I think you'll be very happy, Bro Chris. I kinda wish we got the 46, but that was another $400, and all they had was the floor model. I'm proud of sticking with the lower cost 42 though. Great value and a great picture. The only biotch I have heard (the Mrs) is that the glossy black frame causes some glare. With that said, there is very little glare from the screen and it is very bright even with some sunlight in the room. I got it for Xmas, but had installed within an hour of getting it home . . . Wow, getting out the old 37" tube was a major struggle :% I think one of the guys I used to work with would've said "almost popped a Herman" :0 8)

Good Luck with your purchases guys. I would be tempted to pull the trigger at that price as well, based more on that return policy. That really saves you the purchase of a plan, that way if something does go wrong you can just get a new one no questions asked. That is pretty rare, might as well take advantage.

We just sold a 42' LG LCD with build in DVR for $1,100. It was an open item though. The customer brought it back because he opened it and it didnt fit. I was mad when I found that out.....I told our sales manager I wouldve bought it if I knew he was selling it for that ! There are deals to be had everywhere on these things.

What sort of video source does your neighbor have QC? That surprises me a little bit. Although I think that Panosonics are very overrated, I think it would still have a good picture. The one and only knock I have ever heard on Vizio's are innaccurate colors, and even that isnt with every set you buy......hit and miss.

If you missed my kitchen thread in the DC. Here is a picture of a LCD and In-Ceiling sound system I mounted in the kitchen (yay for fish tape!) The TV pulls off the wall about 18" and swivels 180 degrees off of 3 pivit points and has 30 degrees of tilt. We can easily watch it in either the kitchen or the dining room (when we are done at least.)

On the neighbors set, I was telling him we should install them side by side because it was pretty hard to tell. I could be full of carp. I am dialing in the color a little BTW . . . hmmmmm.

Re: 42

QC you could get an AVIA calibration DVD. It will get you the optimum settings for the TV. I really improved my picture by doing so. It is especially noticeable in skin tones etc.

Out of the box settings can be horrible. Some manufactures deliberately set up for a high contrast to look better than the TV next to it etc. Increasing Sharpness will usually make the picture look worse.....just adding edges where they don't need to be.

Roger on the sharpness. Been there done that one for years. That's how the cable company first "fixed" a weak analog signal years ago . . . :}

Anyway, I notice more accurate skin tones on the digital vs. analog signal for the same network i.e. ABC. I may try the AVIA deal. Thanks.
