What about tier one gasolines? These have a higher detergent content. It's much better to run this in cars and trucks cause it helps to reduce carbon buildup.

One thing about cleaning the carbs and installing new kits is that they will be compatible with the ethenol of today. The newer materials used in recent kits are more resistant to it's effects. Of course, yours may already have the updated kits if it's an 80's motor..The NAPA cleaner will work fine...Make sure to follow it up with gumout spray in all interior passages...

[Other than the complete fuel system, is there anything else I should checkout (i.e. water pump, wiring)? Aftersitting for so long does this effect internal plastic components or wiring?

Thanks, Rick. I guess I'd better get that shop manual in REAL quick! Looks like I've got a lot of studing to do before I start turning wrenches.

i would not soak the carbs overnight in carb cleaner.

i believe you have the plastic(minlon) carbs and to let them sit overnight in agressive carb cleaner might do all kinds of funky stuff like warping.

i would recomend a can of carb cleaner crc or somtething else spray threu all passages and make shure there fully open.
than folow up with some air to blow everyting out. dont loose any parts.

thats my 2 cents.

if its sitting for so long i would check the condition of the vro system.
if its the original vro pump i would replace it.
check the tank clean it out and replace filter if neccesary.

after installing new vro pump and servising vro tank, use 50:1
mix and the vro oiling system at the same time, so you can see if the vro pump is working. if it isnt you still run 50
:1 premix.
if it is pumping oil (oil level in tank is dropping, no alarms)
you can switch to sraight fuel.

defently change waterpump, long sitting will cause stress cracks in the impeller and will loose pressure, or in worst case
breake off and end up in the watertube or block somewere.
put new tsats on.

drain gear oil and check for water.
take of prop and grease splines.
check the timing to make shure everyting is ok.
you never know who messed with it to "tune up the motor"

Very important that you check the pulse limiter. If it's black in color you need to upgrade to the blue one.

If you replace the VRO pump it will come with a new one, but you can buy it seperatly.

There is a problem with it stalling and sputtering at an idle. Accelleration has A LOT if hesitation, but when it does kick in it runs great!! Since it has set for so many years I figured I'd better check it out, but I didn't realize EVERYTHING that needs to be checked. Whew!! It'll be interesting to see if I have any parts left over!!!!
