im buying a 5.5 HP johnson real cheap, and since the guy doesnt know the year and doesnt have pictures, i asked him for the color.

its white. i know green and red was used in the 1950s, so when was white used? im just trying to get a little knowledge on this engine. thanks

Nearly impossible to even come close with that info. Johnson sure liked white paint. Can you get a model number?

OK, I didn't notice the horsepower at first. The white 5.5hp CD-16 came out in 1959. The last 5.5hp was the CD-21 in 1964, still white. So you have a 5 year range to pick from.

some times inside the motor theres a core plug with the model or serial number.

Yep, 59 to 64. I have a 62. Good little motors! Ya gotta pop the powerhead to get at the shift linkage to pull the lower unit and get to the impeller, but no big deal . Worth it
