I have a 1997 Merc 50 hp 2 stroke 13 spline motor with only 15 hrs on it. The owner's manual neglects to say what the alternator output is. I need to know to configure my energy budget and haven't found a source of info
.
What is the maximum output at WOT, and what would it be at idle, which is 750 rpm?

Thanks much for your time and exertise

Re: Alternator output question

That's probably a 16A output at wide open throttle. Output at idle is quite low -- I'm guessing but probably less than five amps if that. Don't know what you plan to operate, but it will be sufficient to keep the starting battery topped off on a boat equipped with a couple of locators, GPS, live wells, lights, bilge pumps, stereo system, and a marine radio. Electronics these days just don't consume a large amount of current. If you intend to try and keep a trolling motor battery charged, forget it. Unless you make very long high speed runs you won't significantly increase the charge.

Re: Alternator output question

My '97 sales brochure says: "18 amp (226 watt) w/voltage regulator". Surely this means at WOT, but alternators will hit 80 or so % of full current at idle and it ramps up fast after that.

Interesting in that you specified 2 cycle engine. For grins I looked over at the only 4 cycles that they offered that year (50 and 9.9) and all it said for the 50 was: "10 amp". So I'm assuming that it was unregulated. I'm guessing it is unregulated because of the low output. The 9.9 said 6 for man start and 10 for elect.

Wonder why the big difference in the engines?

Re: Alternator output question

The 2 cycle is American and the 4 cycle is Jap

Re: Alternator output question

Thanks for all the replies folks. I seemed to recall the value being either 16 or 18 amps, but you know how the memory works after you pass age 67... 8)

My wife says I have CRS, but I can't remember what that means.
