QC: one vital thing. We're an island so illegal immigrants are very much rarer here than in the US. So some of our "luck" may be nature, not nurture. I believe your example of Howard getting "beat up" in parliament illustrates that we are not as PC as the US. I also happen to think for a nation of 20 million we do a pretty good job of contributing to the various World-wide altercations the US and UK get involved with and the World stage in general, especially the food for oil program.... Incidentally, I never eat Mexican ANYWHERE! +o(

[colour=blue]This is not a new idea.

Back in the 60's when my parents migrated to Aus, they had to prove that they could -

1. Work (with a skill, my father was/is a carpet & vinyl layer). In fact, job interviews had to be arranged BEFORE they departed England.

2. Do a written test to show english competency.

Since then the rules have eased greatly, these new proposals are simply bringing them back to how they should be.

I don't think they go far enough!

Ya know Triton you make a good point. Even in business, in the UK and Australia there can be very frank, almost nasty discourse, and then we can go out for a beer like nothing happened. In the US, if we fought like that we might still do business, but we wouldn't usually go out and party after. Huh . . . not sure what the heck that means or has to do with the PC thing. Maybe if you're not blowin' smoke up eachother's skirts, it's easier to hang out.

QC, it really isn't about PC anymore.... it's about "sensitivity".

You can no longer go to a substandard employee and tell them what they are doing wrong.

NO, you have to tell them what a great job they are doing, but if they would just change this one little thing... they call it "positive re-enforcement"... it works as well as praising a puppy for peeing on the rug... dog feels good, you have no guilt, but unfortunately, the rug is going to stink.

Positive re-enforcement is the corporate "new think" these days, and It drives my wife nuts. She has to deal with 23 CNA's (certified nursing assistants) who have basically no schooling, no real skills, but a tude just because there is a CNA shortage, along with other trained Medical personal.

I like my situation better. I don't have "employees". I sub everything I don't do, and if it's sub-standard, there is no thought about sensitivity... It’s do it right, or I'll have your bond.

Funny thing is, I've never really had to go for the bond, it’s always done right in the end.

[colour=blue]Polical correctness ranks low on my scale, if a Chinese immigrant gets upset because he has to learn english then he can KMHA and go home.

Now that is really insensitive. Keep it up, maybe it will become a world standard. 8)

Re: Australia, are they really that much smarter?

Example:
An Oriental goes into a money-changing facility and wants to convert 2,000 Yen to American dollars. He gets $80.00 in return.
A week later he goes into the same place and changes 2,000 Yen into $72.00.
A week later he goes into the same place and changes 2,000 Yen into $65.00.

A little upset, he asks the money-changer why the big differences in the exchange rate. The money-changer shrugs and replies; Fluctuations.

More than a little upset, the Oriantal storms out of the place and at the door turns and yells "Fluc U Melicans too".

Learn the language.

It isn't about sensitivity - it's all about the money.

It's a choice...your wife's company could choose to fire incompetent employees & replace 'em with competent ones if they chose to pay a competitive wage. Instead they choose to train the incompetent ones. Then it becomes a question of how to train employees. They aren't sensitive because they care about their feelings...they're sensitive because they think it's the best way to train somebody.

You've made the choice to fire incompentents - maybe a purely economic decision, maybe not, but it doesn't matter since, as the owner, you're financially accountable only to yourself.

[curious - just exactly who is in charge of Certifying these unschooled CNA's?]

The training varies from 40 to 150 hrs. depending on the program. Then a written test and clinical’s by The Oregon State Board of Nursing.

These aren't Nurses, they are Nursing assistants.... change bed pans, diapers, bath residents.... that type of thing. Pays around $9.50 per plus bennies.

Re: Australia, are they really that much smarter?

this is a pretty interesting subject.
I have only been an Aussie for 15yrs (previously a Kiwi)
Both are definitely different from each other, and you people.

Politics.
I have never in my life experienced the nasty-ness i have seen here concenring politics.

I was talking with Aldo last week about this. We don't care who people vote for. it is irrevelant. A Govt is a Govt, and if it isn't the one you wanted, so what......get on and support them....until the next election.
Australia actually has a Liberal (conservative) Govt (for past 10yrs), yet every State has a Labour (socialist Govt).
I actually vote for:
Labour at State Level,
Liberal at Federal, and
for the Senate, I like to help balance up the power by supporting a 3rd Party, just to keep things even-like.

Now I can't be the only one doing this.....look at the results.

Politics here is just "not discussed" like you guys go at it. It is a no-brainer. Like a guy for who he is, not who he votes for. I don't even know who my mates vote for. It is never discussed.

I am not saying I am right, it just seems the thing to do or the way to be down here.

Imigration:
Keep in mind, there is a bit of water between us and our neighbours, and even if they do make it over in small craft, if they don't land at a populated place, then it is by-bys mate.
The chances of survival on land are zero, and if you think you are going to walk out, forget that too.
Believe me, something is going to eat you.
In Australia, human beings are not the head of the food chain.
So we have a bit of an advantage on that one.

It is just those bl@@#$ "mexican" from the Southern States we got to keep on eye on!!!!

Cheers
Phillip
