SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - U.S. Hispanic groups and activists on Thursday called for a moratorium on workplace raids to round up illegal immigrants, saying they were reminiscent of Nazi crackdowns on Jews in the 1930s.

They accused the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of "racial profiling," or selective enforcement against Hispanics, for arresting 1,300 workers on immigration violations in December 12 raids at meatpacking plants in six states.

"We are demanding an end to these immigration raids, where they are targeting brown faces. That is major, major racial profiling, and that cannot be tolerated," said Rosa Rosales, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, at a news conference.

"This unfortunately reminds me of when Hitler began rounding up the Jews for no reason and locking them up," Democratic Party activist Carla Vela said. "Now they're coming for the Latinos, who will they come for next?"[/b]

I think Carla is missing something here, after all, these are Illegal Aliens, not legal Immigrants as she wishes us to believe.

Funny how most of the illegals rounded up at the Swift plant had fake documentation.

Strange too that there was a line up to replace them... thought Americans did not want these jobs?

Probably not. :p

GREELEY - The line of applicants hoping to fill jobs vacated by undocumented workers taken away by immigration agents at the Swift & Co. meat-processing plant earlier this week was out the door Thursday.

Like many others who had mixed emotions about the raid, Maxine Hernandez said she was upset that families were torn apart, but believes illegal immigrants should not get work using fake documents.

I am really tweaked that no Swift execs have been charged. That is the only way this stuff is gonna stop. Roundups will always look bad and they'll be back . . .

Re: Hispanic groups call for moratorium on work raids

Federal agents raided six Swift & Co. processing plants in six states on Tuesday in search of illegal immigrants who stole the identities of lawful U.S. residents and used their Social Security numbers to get jobs at the beef and pork company.

The company said every employee hired since 1997 has completed the proper forms and received proper work authorization from the government.

"Swift has never condoned the employment of unauthorized workers, nor have we ever knowingly hired such individuals," said Swift & Company CEO Sam Rovit. "Swift has played by the rules and relied in good faith on a program explicitly held out by the president of the United States as an effective tool to help employers comply with applicable immigration laws."

What I learned a few weeks ago on NPR is, that Swift has been cooperating with a government program for several years - they comply fully with the federal documentation requirements. Of course if that's inaccurate I'll have to agree with you. Problem is the documents are forged.

If you want to turn employers into law enforcement officers you have to at least give them tools to do the job. Right now, you might be able to find out if a SSN is a valid SSN, maybe even whether it matches the name, but not if it's being used in any other cities.

So a fully compliant employer might still have illegal aliens on the payroll.

I could see where U.S. citizens of Latin American extraction would be concerned but I don't understand illegally entering a foreign country then making demands like that. It's just rude.

Yes, I knew about the false papers, and was a little carelss dismissing that. You're right and I don't mean to falsely accuse anyone. Let me state it differently. We need to fine and/or imprison any willful employers of illegals. This alone will fix a huge part of the problem. I don't believe for one minute our economy will crumble and I also don't believe that Americans won't do the work. That tired old supply/demand thing remains valid if you ask me ;)

Works for me.... LARGE FINES, LONG PRISON TIMES, say, $10.000 and 2 years per head. That would probably put a big screeching halt to the problem.

Also the Fed needs to upgrade that SS# system they are using, as of now it will only tell you if the number is valid, not if it belongs to the name being used.

Ayuh,..........

Without the Foreign Invaders,.......
There Probably wouldn't be any need to raise the Minimum Wage,........
Plain ole Market Demand would do it all by itself........

This stuff just irks me..

We have laws. if you break them it doesn't matter if it is heart breaking. you broke the law. you knew you were illegal. The union would like nothing better than a stream of dependent, dues paying, workers.

I was enraged to find out this past week that in the large cities in my area, a cop cannot inquire of your legal status if he stops you for a traffic violation. These so called safe haven statutes. What a bunch of crap. If I am not mistaken, you cannot legally drive unless you have a valid license and insurance. How do you legally get a license if you are illegal. How do you legally obtain insurance. Again if you are an illegal, you are just that illegal. You know it and should be suffer the consequences of your actions.

Arrgh.

I don't know who enacted those kinds of laws, but I'll bet they weren’t Republicans.

LOL "Large cities" in Minnesota ;) [it's a J-O-K-E]

"How do you legally obtain insurance." Please Please tell me it's not illegal to sell auto insurance to illegal aliens - just in case there are any who might buy it. Talk about cutting off your nose...

Ok so the jist of this is, Flaming liberals want us to ignore our laws to allow illegal aliens to enjoy the freedoms of real citizens.

Ok, got it. Nothing tricky here.. Moratorium? How many raids have there been?
