I reciently purchased a 1983 regal boat with twin 4 cyl volvo penta engines that need to be replaced due to sinking they are totally not worth tring to rebuild I have a few ? that i cannot seem to get answers for from the dealer.:: 1st ? is the size of the outdrives the plate is rusted and cannot seem to find out the size gear ratio or ne thing else. 2nd ? is would i be able to change the motors to inline 6cyls gm motors and still be able to use the bell housing . 3rd ? is does the port engine have to be counter rotating or does this occure in the outdrives?

Do you have pictures of the transom shield and drives. That would be the easiest way to ID them
Here is a chart, but you really can't see the transom shield and all the little things that may change.
Volvo Drive ID Chart

Going to a Chevy 6 is going to be a real problem as Volvo never used one. So you will not find an exhaust tube that attaches to the transom shield that will work. The ones for the 4 cylinder engines are on the wrong side.
The gear ratio is ONLY for the 4 cylinders and will not work with a V6 or V8 engine.
The counter rotation is done in the drive, not in the engines. Standard rotation engines are all you need.

Hi Bud,...... Welcome Aboard,.......

I think we've talked before,.... Elsewhere,......

There's a couple of Cracker Jack Volvo Guys that hang out here,.......
Maybe 1 of them will stop by,.....

If you're the Poster I'm thinking of,....
You have twin Volvos, of Volvo manufacture,.. Not the converted Chevies,.....
You stated in the other post that the motors are Overhead Cam motors,.....
I Think that is going to be the Key, as to What you can use for your Repower.......

If you are trying to use the "attach a file" thing in the MORE section. It doesn't work, never has, probably never will. What you need to do is get your picture on the web at one of those photo hosting places, then click on the
image.gif
icon and put the URL in the box that shows up.

Ayuh,...............

I've recently taught myself to write code, in order to insert Quotes easier,........
I'd like to see that "More" Button replaced with a "Quote" Button that actually Worked,.......
The 1 in the "More" section sure Doesn't.............

If I could use 1 on each hand,...........

I Could Type Twice as Fast.........................d:)

which one works good

Hoping you mean which photo hosting site, and not which hand bond-o uses to type with,
I don't know which is best, I don't use them, but here is one you can use to post your pictures till something better comes along.
At least it will get the job done.

Re: 1983 regal royal 250XL

You have 280 outdrives. No trim, but there is a mechanical lift motor on each drive to raise the drive.
If the engines are dead, I would sure be looking at the elecrics on those lifts. The motors alone list for about 240 bucks each. I would also be pulling the upper gear boxes and checking the bellows and the drive for water.
Did this sinking happen in salt/brackish water or fresh water

Might want to photo the engines, that would help also.

If it's been sitting for 2 years after sinking in salt water, you might as well write off anything electrical. Including the wiring. And it will probably be faster, easier, and only SLIGHTY more expensive to replace it all than trying to find only the usable (not good, just usable) parts for now. In a couple of more years what you save now will be dead.
The good news is that it won't effect the drives. They live underwater anyway.
Salt water causes wet wood, but it doesn't cause rot like rain and freshwater will.
You have your work cut out for you. I would suggest you find a couple of Volvo 4 cylinder engines somewhere (same model) and install them instead of adding more to your project and trying to change to something else.
Even 2 of the later Volvo 4 cylinder engines (aka rubber band engine due to the timing belt on the front) will require the same gear ratio in the drives. and have the same mounting on the transom shield.

so nothiong else will bolt up to these outdrives except volvo engines I already know that all electrical components need to be replaced all the gauges are faded the controlls are corroded the steering needs replaced the transom and the stringers are solid from what i can see theres no hull damage as from what i can see this is going to be a total refit i was just looking to see if there is ne thing that i could use that will bolt up

Re: 1983 regal royal 250XL

I'm not saying you can't put an inline 6 Chevy in it, I'm just saying it's not a common repower and a lot of the things you will need will be either custom made or backyard butchered together with anything that may work for the moment.
You can get new gears for the drive to change the gear ratio, and you can find a bellhousing for a Volvo that will fit on an IL6 Chevy engine, and if you can rewire to suit, you are home free.......... well maybe not free.
Anything is possible, but will it be usable or sellable when you want something a little more standard.
You asked a few questions not knowing there were more problems than you had thought about.

You aren't the only one, read this thread.
