I've been reading this forum for some time and have really enjoyed it and now i've joined. My first question is about my engine smoke and seems to be running rick.
She is hard to start after a week out of the water but once you get it going it is fine for the rest of the day for starting, but you do get alot of smoke on start up for the rest of the day. If the oil pump is leaking is it repairable or should you replace the entire thing. I've got a manual on order(OMC) to make some repairs but I know that experience is sometimes better than the book. Some people have told me to do away with the pump entirely and mix my own to be safe. Any help would be great.

Re: 97 intruder 150 smoke

i would not recomend mixing the oil yourself with this 60* v6.

it would not be a bad thing to replace the oil pump any way.

just make shure that you are not having an air leak in the fuel system.

how do your plugs look?
what plugs are you using?
is the engine up to temp?
whats the compression?

this motor should not start hard at all.

My manual came today and i'm looking thru it right now and this weekend (weather permitting) i'll get some more detailed info. Thanks for the suggestions, i'll start the hunt.

Excess smoke can also be the result of fuel/oil mix leaking into the engine after shut down. That may be caused by a leaking needle/seat in one or more of the carbs.

Re: 97 intruder 150 smoke

Thanks for the info. I rebuilt all six carbs this weekend and found some very clean carbs (seafoam) and one or more needle and seat not working correctly but I believe the major thing that I found was that who ever had been there before used the wrong o-ring gasket between the carb and manifold. In the kit you get a variety of o-rings and they didn't match up the correct one for the number of the carb. It fit the pattern but wasn't the correct diameter for groove. I put it on the muff and hose and ran it for awhile no leaks or excessive smoke can't wait to get it on the water. I'm going ahead and doing a gear case and water pump update while my hands are greasy.

good job on the gaskets.
dont torqeu the intake manifold to hard.
it will bend overtime and cause airleaks.
