You have to remove a screw on the shift rod linkage, under the carbs.Really a tad hard to do without the factory manual.

The shift rod is located below the bottom carb. While the pin can be removed without removing the lower shrouds, doing so makes the job much easier.

Thanks guys! I have the lower unit off. I noticed that the 8 bolts holding the middle part to the engine part are all rusted. Seems like they ran out of stainless bolts that day.....

Cut it off. Just don't cut in the area of the keyway.

thanks guys, i'll have to buy a dremel tomorrow. What about a pipe wrench on the shaft and backspin on the impeller?

If the key is jammed, hold the driveshaft and turn the impeller [edit] clockwise. You can probably get adequate grip with a rag.

Okay! this is the job that keeps on giving. It's back together and pushing water. so thanks for the help. During startup, it died and gave me nothing....no horn deNada. I was really worried i toasted something good. Turns out the battery took a dump. Replaced that, she starts, runs and pee's water....trouble NOW is she won't shut off. Gonna need to track down my books

Re: 1989 evinrude 40 lower unit removal

The ignition switch has two wires that are usually marked "M". Both lead through the wiring harness. The black wire is the ground. The black and yellow wire is the kill wire which runs to the powerpack. When the key is turned to "Off" the two "M" wires connect and the power pack is grounded out.

The emergency kill switch is wired to the same circuit so that pulling the lanyard grounds the powerpack.

Trace the black and yellow wire from the powerpack to the ignition. If the wire is OK, replace the ignition switch.

Note: Do not put ANY voltage on the black and yellow wire; it will instantly destroy the powerpack.

Edit: the tiller model works the same circuit, grounding the powerpack with a black and yellow wire.

Re: 1989 evinrude 40 lower unit removal

Thanks for the detailed description. I found the yellow black wire in the "wiring box" it has a straight plug type splice. I opened it up and found with key on i had an open on the key side of the wire from wire to ground. Then with key off I had 16 ohms. that would indicate a ground condition with key off, just like you said. Soo I started the motor and the key still does not shut off engine. but I can ground the powerpack side of the wire and get shutdown! By the way....there are 217vdc on that sucker and it nibbles a bit. haha

Twitch....take an ohm meter reading on the black with yellow stripe wire. Take it from the engine (where it plugs to the power pack) to the ignition switch.

Wait till ya' get hit with what's coming outta' the ignition coil............WHOA!!

Thanks...thats what I was up to. The problem was in that connector in the relay/juntion box. It did not make up when I plugged it back together. I was into everything yesterday when the battery took a dump. She is all back together and purring like a kitten. I want to thank everyone for your assistance!

You might want to ohm the black wire from the engine to switch as well, and clean the engine end connection on it.

Sounds as though your switch is ok.
