I don't know much about outboard steering/helm repair and unfortunately a friend has ?damaged my steering. After the boat sat a little while the steering was "frozen" so this friend forcefully turned the wheel, I heard a noise and after we could turn it but the steering would 'skip' when it was fully turned to the left and you would have to push the wheel in toward the console to make it turn, at all, to the right. It sounds like "teeth" are broken on the ?shaft that the wheel turns?? any suggestions about how I would fix this?
I think i have a Teleflex Morse Command 290 Steering System. thanks for any help.

I don't know much about that steering system but it sounds like just what you stated, stripped teeth in the steering gear.
Check behind the steering to see if you can find where the cable attaches,or see inside of it.

There are two types of steering heads for boats. Rack and rotary.

Look behind the dash.

The rack has a long enclosed housing that the cable is attached to.

The rotary has a round "drum" that the cable is attached to.

In either case, you have indeed boken a tooth or more off of either the cable itself or the rack or drum, or both.

The best way to check is to pull the cable out at the steering head. Most are released by a clip where the cable meets the head. Once the clip is released, turn the steering wheel counterclockwise. The cable should unwind and come out. It will be messy.

If there are no teeth broken on the cable, the head is bad.

Either way, I would replace the head and cable. You do not want the steering to let loose or lock up (tooth floating around) while underway.

Steering systems are available here on iboats-see link below.

first, disconnect the steering at the motor, check to see if the motor turn freely. if so you have a cable or helm problem.

this is a rotary helm

this is a rack helm
