Zincs on an old OMC

Gonna be keeping my boat in the water this year and my '76 Johnny 115, doesn't have any zincs (anodes) on it anywhere, and it doesn't look like there's any place to put them.

Is there any aftermarket set ups out there for attaching zincs to these motors or am I gonna have to rig something up.

I was thinking about just getting some zincs and seeing if I could attach them on the outside of the bracket, to the extra holes where the pin would go. I only use the pin in the bottom hole, all the time, so I was thinking if I attached a zinc on both sides of the bracket, it would be enough protection and not get in the way of the engine being raised and lowered.

Unless there's another way.

Thanks.

Take a closer look. Many times zincs get painted over which makes them useless.

There are plenty of aftermarket zincs.

You need zincs on the lower unit and the clamp bracket. The two need to be electrically tied also. There is usually a ground wire running from the exhaust housing to the engine block.

Zincs also need a paint free surface to be mounted to and work correctly.

Look at the link below for some zincs carried by iboats.

DWJ, I have looked everywhere on this engine and cannot find any anodes or spots for anodes. I've had a couple of other old engines and could never find a spot for an anode on them either, just never mattered because I always trailered.

Did they used to make these things without a place for an anode?

Cricket,

You're right. I looked at the parts diagrams for your engine on the BRP site. I didn't see any zincs. Hmmmmm!

Mounting one to the clamp bracket is an easy job, just as you describe. Just make sure the contact area is free of paint and use a stainless fastener.

You can mount another on top of the cavitation plate. Again, make sure the mounting surface is paint free and use stainless fasteners.

Also, remember, zincs do nothing if they do not touch the water. If you leave your boat in the water with the engine tilted up, you may not need them. If any part of your engine does touch the water, you do need them.

Cricket, There are zincs that mount on bolt threads. Perhaps your Johnnyrude has the correct transom bolt. Ditto prop nut zincs. If your tilt pin is in the second hole, you could drill a universal zinc and thru bolt it to the outside of the transom clamp.

Com'on get creative

Thanks for the insight Chris. I thought I was being creative when I said the exact same thing as you in my original post. But I guess re-telling it to me is more creative.

Thanks for the help.
