1980 mercruiser 260 SN 5569077.
Merc I drive SN 6190872.
I have a bellhousing with thread problems for the starboard pivot pin. Apparently the pin worked loose and elongated the the theaded hole in the bellhousing to the point the pivot pin will not tighten down. Question is what bellhousings or even transom assemblies are compatible with this set up.

Thanks.

Re: Merc I drive parts compatibility

There area few differences in some of the Bellhousings,.....
I don't know the Serial #s involved,....
But I've noticed,....
Bellhousing a few years older than your's were Pinned,+ Lock-pinned, instead of Threaded......
These that I'm talking about are the Bellhousing/ transom Assemblies that used the Mod.1, or "R" drives,.... The 1s with the Lifting Eye cast into the top bearing cover,.......

A couple years After your drive was built,... The Squaresh looking drives, the "MR"/ Alpha was Intro'ed,......The 1s with the Flat Top, top bearing covers....
I haven't Tried to switch,+ swap between these Gimbelhousings,....
So I can't say what will Fit what.....

Up-grading to the Alpha Transom Assembly might have it's own fitment issues,.... It depends on Where you go from/ to Alpha/ Pre-alpha......

So,...... Basically,...... They're All the Same,.....Sorta..........

Helicoil it or have it done.I'd do both sides while it's being done.Use new pins also.A new bell housing is close to $500,used ?

Thanks for the input...
Helicoil sounds like a good option. 5/8 - 18 thread? 18-8 stainless insert?

New equivelant part for 1986 Cobra $662.25.

Of course there are none in any of BRP's warehouses.AND they won't be making any.
