I have a brand new 5 HP outboard which has been in the attic for ten years and never used. Now I am wondering whether it will start. Is it possible that the mechanism is frozen from lack of use? How can I check it out myself without taking it to the service dept?

just take out plugs and pour some oil down there, let it sit for like 10mins
then hand turn the motor over slowly
put new plugs in there with fresh gas and try it

Make sure the engine is run in a trash can full of water or on muffs or you'll overheat it. No sense ruining a brand new motor.

Also, I assume this is a two stroke motor so you'll have to mix oil with the fuel if the motor is not oil injected. What type of engine are we actually talking about here.

GET A MANUAL. That is the most important part of any outboard. You can get SELOC manuals right here on iboats - and many cover a wide range of engines from that manufacture.

what make engine. one thing that will be a must to replace before running very long is the impeller in the water pump. 5 years dry, it may disintergrate on the first running.

Oh, and if you say it is brand new, it still may need its break in period. You really need a manual to understand it fully. And before running it, you should read and understand the whole thing, cover to cover. It is not that hard. I am only 13, and dad is making me read the Johnson evinrude manual that covers all the motors from 1.25 to 60 horsepower. You learn a lot and it sticks with you.

I am all for the manual thing too. Santa was supposed to bring me one but did not know the right one to get !! I thought that I had left the owners handbook in an obvious enough place !! Anyway I am now looking for one to study up on before spring.
