Hello all,

I recently had my 99 Johnson 115 powerhead replaced due to low compression at the suggestion of the marina when I went to take it in for repair. So they replaced the powerhead, installed a new tach and said it ware ready to go. We picked it up and that day it didn't sound right. We brought it back that day because the same problem of not starting was back after all this money and time! So now this guy is telling me that the powerpack was firing twice on the #4 cyl which cause the powerpack to go bad and now he want's to charge me 350 bucks for a powerpack. and a running boat because he say's the powerpack went bad causing the powehead to go bad. His argument is that the powerpack caused the powerhead to fail so it's not covered under warranty
#1 does this sound like bull )&^&*???
#2 does 350 smell like #1?

What are my options and can this be disputed by a certified johnson tech rep? If so, does anyone know of one to contact?

What do you think I should do in this situation?

Sound like bull to me, if that was the problem why did they not find when the repair was done and why did it not do it on the old powerhead?

its possible that your pp is not working propper and could cause preignition caused by the pack firing to early.

the bull part about it is that when they checked out the first powerhead they should have found the cause.
so the mechanic blamed a faulty pp causing your first powerhead to crap on you??? why would this bozo install a faultuy part on your brand new powerhead?
my guess is he never checked your pp to begin with.
he installed this powerpack so he is responsible for installing faulty parts.

he should be lucky you came back and not blow your new powerhead.
you are doing him a favour.
find a other repairshop.

Take it someplace else and find out the real problem with the motor. Sounds like the real problem with the repair may have been the diagnosis. When it was returned to you, it obviously hadn't been properly tested. Got some compression numbers for us from before the repair? Tach failures happen but are rare. What's up with that? What are the mechanic's qualifications and is the facility a Johnnyrude dealership?

Had to replace the powerhead because of low compression?.....wasn't the block rebuildable?
Did they tell you what the compression was on each hole?
Did they offer any clue as to "why" the compression was low?

If the answer it "NO" to either of the last two questons, re-read Dutch's post and find another shop.

Interesting post. When replacing (or rebuilding) a powerhead you generally rebuild the carbs and do a waterpump service. This makes sense. But how do you check for a power pack double firing a cylinder?

And can a power pack actually do that?It would mean the power pack is bypassing the sensor as well as the timing wheel, but only double firing #4 cylinder? Not the others?

Anyhow,we would have installed the new pack free,as as good will customer relations. You spent $$$ on the new powerhead.

But I don't know how I would diagnos before or after that #4 cylinder was double firing.

DPH, to double fire on 1 cyl wouldn't it take two implules from the trigger to fire it or could a shorted wire fire it, a rectifier switch in the box could retard the ign point but not advance it without a advanced signal from the trigger, so the hole deal sounds like parts changers at work and silver tongued devil's covering it up. We seem to be blessed with more and more of them in the business--Bob

A power pak won't double fire one cylinder, but it will fire two cylinders at the same time, such as 1, and 3, or 2, and 4. The manual point's out how to test for this. That should have shown itself when they test run the engine after rebuild. We would alway's test run any rebuild, then take the customer along so that he could test run it before turning it over to him.
