I've been thinking about installing an hours counter on my 1073 115 hp Johnson to keep up with maintenance. What is the cheapest and easist way for me to do this?

I'm not sure I'd bother at this late date. Annual service should be adequate with certain items done every two or three years. But there are hourmeters available that install in the dash like any other small gauge. Better and cheaper would be a tag under the hood showing date and service performed.

I'm installing a rebuilt powerhead, so I'd like to track its use. I wasn't worried about this on the old one.

Then it would make sense. Besides dash gauges, Mercury makes an electronic one the mounts on the powerhead and is triggered by a wire wrapped around any handy sparkplug wire.

Along with the fresh powerhead, you should have a fresh water pump. Not just the impeller, the whole pump. I insist on that anytime I replace a powerhead.

You can buy the hourmeter at any marine supply ,perhaps through this website.Wiring is easy.Just a lead from your keyswitch accessory terminal and a ground. Most require a hole to be drilled for installation. It's a great idea .

How does it track the hours. Pulses from the stator are timed according to shaft speed.
