AMD vs Intel Processors

I'm helping a friend in college with limited funds upgrade his computer. I used to work for a shop building machines but I'm a little out of the loop when it comes to the new processors.

Looks like the Athlon XP 2600+ is the rough equivalent to a P4 2.8GHz. Is this correct? I'm not looking at any of the 64 bit processors. There are about a billion web sites with CPU Statistics and my eyes are glazing over. I've been checking e-bay and pricewatch for the best bang for the buck. What say you IT guys?

I'm just looking for opinions on processors (around a P4 2.8 probably). No gaming. I will purchase a motherboard and RAM based on the CPU. I will reuse ATX case, and all drives. I would like to keep it under $200. Thanks.

Ditto on the P4...The AMD chips run hotter
Asus makes a solid motherboard...been using them for awhile now.
Check a website called NewEgg or ZipZoomFly,They have great prices and free shipping on most items.

All orders require 1-2 business days of processing time prior to shipping.

The above system is far faster than a p 4 system and cost's quite a bit less, dont let that Sempron cpu fool you it's as fast you'll ever need.

One last note this system is 64 bit ready and faster than most p-4's........Good lick ....As to the ram check out the lat timing's that's good ram.

Re: AMD vs Intel Processors

I would say which one is better changes ALL the time and that for 99% of the users would never know the difference

With the intel the best right now after a long period of better AMD STUFF

I've had good success with both Intel and AMD. Like has been said...AMD's tend to run hotter but they're also cheaper.

Agreed for maybe 2 years amd had the better priced and faster cpu, today intel proc's have the edge. However that applies only to gaming, video decoding or some type of graphic intensive program.

That little Sempron is @ 50.00 and will outrun most any p4 running and being a venic core it will generate very little if any heat. The reason i led with that proc is it fit's his budget nicely, will run any app he chose's, it's fast enough to run any game and the user may go to a 64 bit OS any time he or she choose's

Now if he has a any inclination to tinker it can probably overclocked to 2.5 to 2.7, in it's present form its' faster than a 2.8c and by far cheaper.

The Proc's he is refering to are truly dated but still very good for alround use, keep in mind that's a 3400 semp and not the 3100 reiveiwed in the following article.

Re: AMD vs Intel Processors

Use and like both. Using an Athlon XP 2800+ at the moment. It had the most bang for the buck when I bought. I also highly recommend Asus motherboards and Corsair memory (even the cheap stuff).

Newegg!

I don't see where it really matters which processor "runs hotter". If you buy the boxed processor it'll have a heatsink & fan designed by the manufacturer. It will cool the processor sufficiently in either case. It's importation to have proper case ventilation too. 1 sucking and 1 blowing case fan should do it.

Re: AMD vs Intel Processors

I've always felt AMD was more bang for the buck. I've never had a heating issue, and I'm on my third AMD set-up. I've got the same chip as 386. Even when I overclocked it, the heat was well within tolerance. I also have a very good ANTEC case with 2 large fans to move the air.
