Hello all,
I found a crack on the lower unit of my 61 Johnson 40hp. I believe water got into the LU and froze.
When I checked the oil in the LU there was none, just water.
I know the last few trips in Nov. were run with this crack in the LU.
Can a crack like this be repaired? Should I take apart the gearbox and check for damage?
Thanks,
Muddlerman

You can sometimes repair them with JB Weld. You have nothing to lose at this point.

I would be concerned with rust and wear damage from running with water instead of oil, in addition to the crack. Used lower units are fairly plentiful. Go to www.aomci.org and put a free want ad on their Webvertize page.

If it is just a crack you can repair it with aluminum brazing rods available from aluminumrepair.com. Fixed up a crack in the cavitation fin on mine just fine. All you need is a propane or mapp gas torch.

Thank you folks for your advise, I will try to repair the crack and bring the old seahorse back to life.
I'll post some pictures if I can figure it out.:/
Thanks
