Can you tell I am a neophite? I am trying to diagnose ignition problems for a 1996 c115 Yamaha. Do the charge coils produce AC or DC? I find no mention of a rectifer before the CDI unit for the charge coils. Also can you use a Max/Min multimeter to measure the output voltages from CDi components or do you need to use a peak read voltmemer or a DVA?

AC from the CCC (capacitor charge coil) aka stator
u need a dva with a DMM or analog with auto ranging
AC from pulser/triggers
DC volts from cdi
DC volts out of the reg/rectifier

What are the symptoms of your problem? Why do you think itis ignition?

THanks. That is what I needed to know.

What does dva stand for and what kind of a dva meter with auto ranging is best to buy and where?

DIRECT VOLTAGE ADAPTER

fluke is good company
any dmm is good as long as it is shielded, which will have the CE symbol on it

rapair has a nice adapter that is compatable with most digital multi meters.
I think sears has one as well.
while the DC voltage out of the CDI is technically a DC it is rapid enough that it acts like AC.
the CDI rectifies the AC voltage from the charge coils and stores it in a capacitor. the ac voltage from the trigger coils is used to trigger an SCR to allow the capacitor to discharge through the ign coil primary windings.
a cap will discharge very rapidly, that is why you need a peak reading meter or the peak reading adapter.
